Emergency Department Leadership

The Clinical Nurse Manager oversees the Emergency Departments at both Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals, providing strategic, operational, and clinical leadership to ensure safe, efficient, and patient-centered emergency care.

Big Rapids Emergency Department

The Big Rapids Emergency Department is a community-based facility within the Corewell Health system and is both a Certified Primary Stroke Center and a Level IV Trauma Center. The department features 20 treatment spaces capable of managing everything from minor illnesses to complex medical and traumatic emergencies. With more than 27,000 visits annually, the Big Rapids ED consistently ranks highly in patient experience and throughput. Our interdisciplinary teams collaborate closely to deliver relationship-based care, and we strongly value teamwork, continuous improvement, and a positive team culture.

Reed City Emergency Department

The Reed City Emergency Department is also a community-based Corewell Health facility with 20 treatment spaces designed to care for a wide range of medical and traumatic emergencies. Interdisciplinary collaboration is central to how care is delivered, ensuring patients and their loved ones feel supported throughout their visit. We foster a culture that values teamwork, continuous improvement, and shared accountability for excellence in care.

Scope of work

Assumes 24-hour accountability for managing, supervising, and coordinating the operational and financial effectiveness and efficiency of the nursing services/ unit of the hospital. Develops policies, procedures and processes in coordination with other leaders to ensure the highest quality services are provided at all times to all customers. Assures presence of a supportive and healthy work environment that promotes retention and embraces diversity. Key responsibilities include unit based goal setting, program development, fiscal management, resource allocation, standards of care, policy and procedure development and interpretation, human resource development, performance improvement, supports a culture of safety and maintenance of interprofessional collaborative relationships.

Nurse Managers in inpatient and outpatient units are REQUIRED to obtain their Nursing Administration or Professional/Specialty Certification within 12 months of assuming the role, or within 12 months of achieving eligibility to sit for the exam if not eligible upon hire in to the role.

  • Master's Degree MS, MSN, MBS, MM, MHA, MPH Preferred.
  • 2 years of relevant clinical nursing experience Required.
  • 1 years of recent relevant leadership Required.
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required.
  • AHA Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Required within 90 days.
  • AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Required within 90 days.
  • AHA Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Required within 90 days.

Description The Nurse Manager is a Registered Professional Nurse who acts as a clinical leader in the daily function of a unit and provides oversight of quality patient care delivery, in conjunction with, or in the absence of, a Department Director. In this role, the Nurse Manager plans, organizes, schedules, monitors and leads the work of individuals and groups to attain desired results. This position selects and develops staff to promote a healthy work environment. The Nurse Manager facilitates Centra’s organizational and nursing strategic plan, maintains quality and safe patient care, promotes a service-oriented environment and functions within budgetary guidelines. Ensure effective delivery of clinical patient care and compliance with administrative and clinical policies and procedures. Serve as the staff and patient advocate to ensure optimal patient care. Interface with patients and families to ensure that care is consistent with their expectations. Assure coordination/participation of unit based staff on department and organization wide councils/committees. Manage, supervise and coordinate delivery of patient care for assigned patient care area on a 24 hour basis. Ensure compliance with clinical patient care standards and established policies and procedures. Maintain clinical competencies for assigned clinical area and provides bedside care as needed. Assess/coach and evaluate staff level of practice. Develop programs that foster continued clinical development from novice to expert to positively impact on patient care and career satisfaction of staff. Maintain required unit records, reports and statistics for administrative purposes, ensures compliance with established hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality control (POCT); PI, safety, environmental and infection control. Communicate requirements to staff, and hold staff accountable to established requirements. Coordinate the development, implementation and evaluation of policies and procedures designed to improve operational efficiency. Coordinate QC/PI activities with appropriate staff. Oversee various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, terminations and other related activities. Plan, schedule and organize work for group ensuring proper distribution and delegation of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel, space and facilities; overall accountability for the requisition, care and maintenance of unit inventory, equipment and supplies. Coordinate the activities of nursing staff with other hospital personnel; accountable for the effective and efficient operation of the unit and staff including ensuring that orders, treatments, plans of care, clinical pathways are being carried out in a manner supportive of patient care and recovery. Ensure documentation of patient care is complete and accurate in accordance with hospital and unit policies and procedures. Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Operations to determine fiscal requirements of assigned unit(s), and prepare budgetary recommendations. Monitor the level of resources utilized in service delivery and determines the appropriateness of resource consumption in the service. Develop action plans in conjunction with the Director of Clinical Operations to ensure budget and resource efficiency, and satisfaction with patient care delivery. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Education: Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required. Master's degree in Nursing strongly preferred. Experience: Three years of experience in outpatient nursing is required 1 or more years of leadership experience (as a clinical supervisor or manager in nursing) preferred. 1 or more years of experience in an Emergency Department Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification: Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS certification required.
