Job Description

UC Health is hiring a Full Time Registered Nurse (RN) for the Surgical Oncology unit for the Night Shift at the UC Medical Center. Be a part of a growing Surgical Oncology program, by making an indelible impact cancer patient’s lives through caring for them with the most advanced treatment.

The Surgical Oncology nurse will support the Medical Center’s 24-bed Surgical Oncology unit and Level I Trauma Center, delivering high-quality care to patients based on assessed needs, established standards of care and according to policy and procedures.

UCMC is at the forefront in treating patients with pancreatic and liver diseases and is one of two centers that offer autologous islet cell transplantation for the treatment of chronic pancreatitis. 9CCP cares for these patients following ICU until discharge and when patients are readmitted with pain or infection issues. The unit also cares for acute care surgery, thoracic, gynecology/oncology, vascular and colorectal patients.

Most of the patients at 9CCP are cared for under the direction of a surgeon. Most patients are admitted from PACU, ICU, ER or directly from their home. Nursing care is concentrated around recovery after surgery including mobility, monitoring intake and output and pain management.

Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse (RN) is an individual who holds a current state license to practice nursing. The practice of nursing requires specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide care to groups and individuals. The RN utilizes knowledge derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care. The care is culturally based and age-specific.

Prepares, implements, evaluates, revises and coordinates interdisciplinary plan of care for each assigned patient in a collaborative effort with the other healthcare team members and patient/family within the time frame indicated by unit's standards of practice.
Communicates formulated plan of care, as appropriate, to all levels of associates involved in the patient's care, and demonstrates ability to establish priorities of care based on patient's assessment and needs.
Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment, and involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient.
Identifies and responds appropriately to different patient needs resulting from behavioral health problems, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms.
Demonstrates critical thinking, accountability, flexibility, and a cooperative attitude in meeting the needs of the unit.
Nursing process is accurately and concisely documented, including evaluation of treatment and in accordance to hospital policy and procedure.
Acts as a resource person and mentor for new personnel, floater, and/or supplemental staff working on the unit.
Assumes responsibility for personal professional development and contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues, and others.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES 1. The Clinical Director designates an alternate, in writing, as responsible for fulfilling the duties of the DCS . 2. Supervises all direct and indirect patient services provided by clinical organization personnel. 3. Provides guidance and counseling to coordinators and Clinical Managers to assist them in continually improving all aspects of hospice care services, provided through organization personnel. 4. In the absence of the Executive Director/Administrator, the Clinical Director becomes the acting Executive Director/Administrator and will be vested with authority to act in behalf of the Executive Director/Administrator. 25. Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director/Administrator. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS 1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing 2. Registered Nurse, with a License in good standing to practice in the state of Ohio. 3. Either a Bachelor’s degree in nursing with three (3) years of management experience within the last five (5) years in a hospice or related health care organization, at least one (1) year of which was in a supervisory or administrative capacity, OR A Registered Nurse with four (4) years’ experience within the last five (5) years in a hospice, home health agency, primary care clinic or health facility, at least one (1) year of which was in a supervisory or administrative capacity. 4. Once an offer of employment is made, it is contingent upon satisfactory references, as requested, and criminal background checks by regulation. 5. Demonstrated ability to supervise and direct professional and administrative personnel. 6. Ability to market and deal tactfully with customers and the community. 7. Must be a licensed driver with an automobile that is insured in accordance with state and/or organization requirements and is in good working order. 8. Has excellent observation, verbal and written communication skills. 9. Possesses and maintains CPR certification (may not be internet based unless the demonstration of skills was hands on and observed by a certified trainer) 10.
