TITLE: DEPARTMENT: SUPERVISION:
DIRECTOR OF NURSING NURSING
POSITION GOAL: As a member of the facility management team, the Director of Nursing provides direction and management activities to the nursing staff and ensures that person- center quality care is provided. This position supports the efforts of maintaining compliance with State and Federal regulations and facility policies and procedures.
ENVIRONMENT: Geriatric care is provided in a one-story attractive facility to residents of Humphreys County Nursing Home.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Major Job Responsibility:
Demonstrates Appropriate Knowledge and skills Necessary to Plan, Coordinate, Organize, and Supervise the Department of Nursing Services.
Conducts chart reviews according to policy and procedure 100% of the time.
Knowledgeable of medical terms, medical abbreviations, medical charts, medications, medical protocols and facility policy and procedures.
• Has a working knowledge of legal terms and procedures.
Ensures clinical staff completes their documentation within 24 hours of visit 100% of the time in LTC.
Utilizes the computer system and other software programs as tools to assist in conducting business.
Ensures Care is appropriate, accurate and accepted within standards of care.
Meets with Staff to share and clarify policy and procedure information at least monthly.
HUMPHREYS COUNTY NURSING HOME
Participates in Quality Assessment Performance Improvement Activities I.e. meetings, action planning, data collecting, program evaluation, PI Projects, and peer review.
• Conducts staff meetings as necessary, according to policy.
• Reviews QI indicators at QAPI meetings.
• Keeps the Administrator informed of serious patient care and personnel
issues.
Reviews computer reports as require by policy and procedures 100% of the time.
• Utilizes computer reports for case conference meeting 100% of time.
• Tracks productivity and utilization of residents weekly.
Ensures clinical staff completes orientation materials and required education and training expected by facility policies and procedures.
Assist in cross training of jobs so that a minimum of two (2) people are competent
• Assist with workshops and seminars when requested.
2. Demonstrates Knowledge and skills to Interpret and Communicate State and Federal Regulations
Ensures confidentiality of all non-public information and meets any HIPAA requirements of all records and files.
Ensures rules and regulations are applied and communicated to staff 100% of the time.
• Utilizes Policy and Procedure Manual effectively.
• Anticipates critical events related to workload and makes prior provisions to deal with them. Keeps Administrator informed of critical events and /or situations of possible negative outcomes.
Assist staff with interpretations of regulation when needed.

3. Demonstrates adequate knowledge and skills to function as a
leader and/or Director
• Maintains familiarity with all aspects of assigned areas of responsibilities.
Keeps staff up-to-date on policy, rule and/or statute changes and trains them appropriately.
Implements changes as expeditiously as possible, and monitors staff to ensure that the changes are being properly implemented.
• Handles all problems and staff in a professional, consistent and fair manner.
Determines critical and non-critical aspects of a situation accurately, and gathers information accordingly. Recognizes when to consult with the supervisor for assistance for resolution.
Approves leave and employee time in accordance with the rules and policies of the Facility.
Ensures that all travel regulations and procedures are followed 100% of the time.
Follows all areas of the Facility guidelines concerning the review of job performance plans and evaluations, and completes them properly and timely.
Maintains correct and professional communications with the public, patients, employees and other agencies, reflecting the mission of the Facility.
Ensures fair and equable job assignments that are made based on qualifications and skills.
• Assists with emergency calls or situations when needed.
SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP: Provides supervision to the staff of the nursing department and serves as a resource for person-center care.
HUMPHREYS COUNTY NURSING HOME
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
College degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school and six months to one-year experience in a long term care setting. Prefer supervisory and administrative experience. CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS JOB:
Licensed Professional Nurse in the State of Tennessee. CPR Certification
SKILLS: Minimum of two (2) years experience in medical/surgical, rehabilitation nursing. Must be well motivated, organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks. Must be able to interact effectively with a wide variety of people. Excellent communication skills. Able to serve as an example to other employees.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in clean, well-lighted, heated and air conditioned area. Exposure to unpleasant sights, smells and infectious diseases possible. Work schedule is 72-84 hours every two weeks. May need to work overtime as need arises. Holiday and weekend work at times.
SKILLS REQUIRED TO SUCCESSFULLY ACCOMPLISH THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS JOB:
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups or managers, residents, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts, such as statistics. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical solutions.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of practical problems.
