Position Summary:

Collaborates with physician to provide a plan of care that will return the patient to optimal health. Provides bedside nursing care and carries out medical orders. Delegates to and oversees Nurse Assistant, Patient Care Associate, OB Care Associate, Surgical Service Assistant, Nursing Clerk and Psychiatric Tech functions. Responsible for evaluating effectiveness of care plan.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Assumes responsibility for a leadership role encompassing:

  • Integrating evidence-based knowledge into practice.
  • Delegation and coordination of tasks and assignments of nursing care.
  • Facilitates/participates in patient conferences.
  • Identifies and provides the means to meet patients’ ongoing and discharge/transfer teaching needs by communicating with the appropriate resource persons and attending discharge/transfer planning conferences.
  • Assumes the responsibility for professional growth by seeking out educational opportunities and utilizing programs in the hospital or elsewhere in the community.
  • Teaches and/or guides professional and ancillary personnel.
  • Precepts/mentors new employees and students.
  • Functions as a team leader to ensure proper patient placement and delegation of assignments.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and holding a current license to practice in the state of Michigan.
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association or Red Cross Certification.
  • Must satisfactorily complete the first available basic dysrhythmia course

Preferred:

  • Six (6) months experience in an acute care setting or equivalent
  • Orthopedic Nurse Certification

Initiates and participates in development of nursing standards, policies, and procedures. Assists in the instruction and supervision of nursing care given by staff. Provides manager with input for Job Performance Reviews (JPR�s), if requested. Sets realistic short- and long-range performance goals and evaluates progress. Takes responsibility for continued professional development and advancement of clinical practice. Assures compliance with all policies, procedures, regulations, standards and laws such as but not limited to Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH). Assists with court hearings, deferrals, and filing legal paperwork, when needed. Flexible with schedule to meet the needs of the unit. All other duties as assigned. New requirement added in March 2020, incumbents with an associate's degree in nursing have until 1/1/2025 to obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing. Other Information Experience, Training And Skills Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures as normally acquired through 3 years’ experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting. Knowledge of nursing leadership as normally acquired through working 1 year in a Medical Center or similar setting with involvement in supervision, charge nurse, project implementation, professional development program, shared governance leadership role, or equivalent.
