About the Unit
Our 30-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) offers a highly collaborative, team-oriented environment dedicated to delivering exceptional care to critically ill newborns. The unit is supported 24/7 by an experienced care team, including a neonatologist and neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP), ensuring continuous, specialized coverage.

NICU nurses are valued members of the team and actively participate in hospital-wide nursing councils, contributing to professional practice and shared governance. All nurses are Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certified and play a vital role in attending high-risk deliveries in the labor and delivery unit.

In partnership with a multidisciplinary team, NICU nurses also assist in the transport of infants from surrounding hospitals, providing critical care throughout the transfer process to Corewell Health Dearborn’s NICU.

Scope of work

The Clinical Nurse Manager is an experienced leader responsible for the overall management of assigned units and services. This role provides leadership and oversight of patient care staff to support a culture of excellence in clinical practice, staff engagement, recruitment and retention, and strong clinical and operational outcomes.

The Nurse Manager ensures the safe and effective delivery of patient care while maintaining compliance with all regulatory, administrative, and clinical standards, as well as organizational policies and procedures. Serving as a key advocate for safety and retention, the Nurse Manager leverages data, technology, and evidence-based practices to drive decision-making and proactively mitigate risk.

This role fosters a desirable and supportive work environment that enables staff and the organization to meet or exceed strategic goals. The Nurse Manager models effective communication and collaboration with physicians, staff, patients, and interdisciplinary partners. Role-specific responsibilities and competencies align with the organization’s Professional Practice Model.

The position reports to the Director of Nursing or above.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Under general direction, the Clinical Nurse Manager maintains 24-hour accountability for leadership and management of a designated patient care unit. Responsibilities include promoting high-quality nursing care, cost-effective resource utilization, staff professional development, and a Patient- and Family-Centered Care culture.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of clinical nursing experience
  • Two years of demonstrated informal leadership experience for internal candidates, which may include roles such as Charge Nurse, Lead Nurse, or participation in Shared Governance Councils
  • MI Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • CCRN (Neonatal) within one year
  • Two to three years of formal nursing leadership experience (external candidates)

Preferred

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
  • NICU experience strongly preferred

Determines medical necessity for other services. Regularly re-evaluates the patient’s nursing needs. Evaluates the patient’s ADL and iADL abilities and need for home health aide. Develops and implements the HHA plan of care when HHA services are ordered. Revises and signs this care plan the beginning of each certification period. Supervises HHA in accordance with state/federal requirements and documents the supervision. Orders “other” professional services that may be appropriate to the needs. Reviews billing processes with patient and/or family advising patient and/or family when co-pay or Medicare is not likely to pay for services. Effectively communicates ongoing with patient and family progression/changes in POC. Effectively communicates with Supervisor/Nursing Director/other disciplines in the case. Communication with the patient’s MD (verbally and/or in writing) to obtain effective treatment modalities and/or rehabilitative therapy modalities. Actively communicates in the case conferencing sessions to establish best practices. Submits requests for re-authorization of “more visits needed” to payers timely. Coordinates Community Services for the patient to assist in safe home care needs. Participates in the Performance Improvement Committee process. Performs timely clinical record reviews (CRR) per Agency policy in collaboration with the Nursing Supervisor. Participates in ongoing staff meetings/in-services. Participates in the growth of office by being a willing preceptor for same discipline employees. Participates in the planning, operation and evaluation of the nursing services of the organization. Maintains professional licensure per state requirements. Notifies the Agency of emergencies, sickness, and other imminent occurrences that may affect the patient caseload as quickly as possible relative to the event’s occurrence. Submits written time requests 2 weeks or more in advance of planned time off. Other duties as assigned. Able to hear, speak, understand and communicate effectively in English. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS On a daily basis: walking, standing, sitting, reaching, use of telephone, use of computers & other office equipment, lifting/transferring 150 lbs or greater, bending, stooping, climbing stairs.
