Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Provides directly and through delegation patient care for facility clients.

  • Maintains knowledge of normal/abnormal parameters that identify clients at risk.
  • Provides patient care in accordance to standards and guidelines.
  • Responds to telephone calls and triages appropriately.
  • Provides patient with reassurance, accurate teaching and direction.

2. Ensures efficient delivery of healthcare services throughout the duration of the patient visit.

  • Ensures that medical records are completed, accurate and updated.
  • Initiates patient contact and prepares patient for examination.  Obtains vital signs, weight, age, temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiratory, history and chief complaint.
  • Observes patients with abnormal signs and symptoms, communicates their condition to the physician and documents the same in the medical record.
  • Ensures patient understanding of physician instruction upon discharge.
  • Documents patients medical record entries and documents charge information into electronic medical record for billing.

3.  Assist with testing and treatment procedures under the Physicians supervision.

  • Assists physician in applying splints and dressings.
  • Performs and follows through in all indicated orders from physician.
  • Assists with sample medications and sample medication logs.
  • Arranges and administers any necessary patient testing or admission. Obtains appropriate referrals required.  Retrieves test results as needed and notifies patient.
  • Assists physician in preparing for minor surgeries and physicals.
  • Obtains appropriate consents before all invasive procedures or immunizations are preformed.
  • Distributes patient education materials as directed.  Assists in patient instruction and ascertains patient understanding regarding treatment and medication usage.
  • Performs laboratory tests and treatments as prescribed.
  • Assists in maintaining laboratory log.

4.  Ensures all patient care areas, equipment and materials are appropriately stocked and maintained.

  • Maintains and organizes adequate supply of patient education materials.
  • Orders and maintains required supplies and equipment for clinical care areas ensuring exam rooms are stocked appropriately.
  • Keep exam rooms clean, free of waste and organized in accordance with cleaning protocol.  Ensures that instruments are sterile and equipment is in working order.

5.  All other duties as assigned

CMA PATIENT ACCESS SPECIALIST- PULMONARY MEDICINE

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists physician/provider by rooming patients and documenting signs/symptoms, vital signs and BMI, reviews and documents medical, surgical, and family histories, medications and any other pertinent information the provider needs to make an informed decision regarding the patient’s care and plan of treatment. Performs set-up for procedures and assists provider with procedures. Performs dressing changes, suture/staple removal, cast removal, DME fittings, prepares injections and obtains prior authorizations for medication. Fields phone calls from patients regarding medical questions, test results, medication refills etc. and communicates effectively with the respective provider regarding the issue and documents appropriately. Faxes and electronically transmits prescription refills to pharmacies as requested by the patient and authorized by the provider. Schedules tests and procedures and obtains prior authorizations for those tests and procedures. Communicates effectively with the operating room staff when scheduling procedures and communicates with other departments regarding tests that are scheduled in that department. Documents appropriately in the patient’s medical record regarding any scheduled tests/procedures. Reviews and explains any preparations and instructions for scheduled tests and procedures. Ensures the patient understands said instructions. Initiates and follows up on cardiac and medical clearances for said tests/procedures. Prepares patient medical records for upcoming appointments to ensure all test results and/or outside records are obtained and ready for provider to review prior to the patient’s arrival for their scheduled appointment. Enters orders into electronic medical record (EMR)system as directed by physician. Faxes or electronically transmits/receives medical records for continuity of care. Completes Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and Short and Long-Term Disability paperwork and coordinates with the Medical Information Department if additional medical records are requested along with said paperwork. Orders medical supplies and medications. Coordinates disposal of bio-hazardous materials with Johnson Memorial Health (JMH) and restocks patient exam rooms. Maintains cleanliness of patient exam rooms and nursing area. Maintains sample medication counts and logs. Works with the Pharmacy Department to properly dispose of expired medications. Performs instrument sterilization and proper maintenance of the autoclave. Coordinates incoming and outgoing referrals. Schedules appointments, completes registrations, scans insurance card(s), photo ID(s) and other pertinent information into the patient’s electronic record. Collects and posts co-payments and ensures that the appropriate insurance referral or authorization is received which allows us to consult and treat the patient for the condition for which they are scheduled. Runs insurance eligibility in Cerner and multiple websites to ensure the patient has active coverage and scans this information into Revenue Cycle system. Performs other related duties as assigned. Clearly communicates and continuously supports the Mission and Values of JMH. Conducts all activities in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, and hospital policies and procedures including blood and body substance precautions. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High school graduate in addition to specialized courses to include the successful completion of, and graduation from, a recognized medical assistant training course or equivalent experience required. Current CMA (AAMA), RMA, NCMA or CCMA certification required. Requires current BLS or CPR for Healthcare Providers certification within 6 months of hire.
