Registered Nurse - Pre-Admission - Part Time

Position Summary:
Manages the hospital's Employee Health function to include development and administration of all programs, policies, and procedures; ensures that all employees have the opportunity to seek attention for health related problems. In addition, provides infection control surveillance as it relates to employees and their fitness for work.
Experience:
Must possess the ability to interact and communicate with a wide cross section of individuals in a courteous and tactful manner. Must possess the highest ethical standards with respect to discretion and regard for confidential information. May spend a majority of working hours standing. May be required to work hours other than those normally scheduled. Must possess the ability to function effectively under significant stress levels which exist on occasion. Must consistently strive to produce error free work and to meet the requirements of internal and external customers, on time every time in accordance with the organization's Total Quality Management process. Must possess an abiding commitment to basic ethical and legal principles.
Essential Functions:
erforms initial pre‐placement physical assessment of potential employees and arranges for a physical by physician. Performs or schedules tests as requested by employees according to the current policy on health benefits (e.g., eye test for driver's license renewal, pregnancy tests, pap smears). Maintains complete, current medical records on all employees to comply with OSHA and other applicable regulations. Assures compliance with all standards set by the JCAHO, NYS Department of Health, and all other relevant regulatory agencies. Documents, updates, and administers all department policies and procedures. Prepares and submits reports as required by Director of Human Resources or Administration.
Maintains a current knowledge of trends in the field of hospital employee health through research, journal reading and attendance at conferences. Acts as a liaison between employees, physicians, and community agencies as required. Works effectively and in cooperation with Medical Staff, Department Heads, Infection Control and Administration in the performance of duties. May be required (by the needs of employees) to perform counseling or at minimum, to recognize problems of an emotional or psychological nature and refer the employee to an appropriate resource. May be required to respond to critical situations involving the health of employees.
Assists Employee Health Physician as needed or requested. Coordinates and maintains annual health assessment records of the volunteers Provides annual tuberculosis screening of the volunteers. Directs follow up procedure for positive manteaux reading. Receives list of nursing students from CCC and BOCES with verification of each student’s having met the physical and immunization requirements necessary to insure they are not a potential risk to patients and other personnel. Department managers are notified of all students being medically cleared to work on their unit. Performs manteaux (TB skin tests) on Home Health Care personnel. Sends number of tests done periodically to controller for billing. Administers measles, Hepatitis B vaccines and manteaux (TB skin tests) to various contracted agencies and individuals, i.e., CCC and Boces Nursing / Health Care Students. Directs follow up procedure for positive manteaux reading.
Counsels employees who have exposure to blood/body fluids regarding potential Hepatitis B and/or HIV Infection. Coordinates blood testing per hospital Blood/Body Fluid Exposure policy and gives appropriate prophylaxis. Notifies source patient’s physician of exposure and that patient will have Hepatitis screen drawn and receive HIV counseling if medical condition warrants it. Notifies Infection Control Nurse of all blood/body fluid exposures who will in turn counsel source patients on HIV testing. If Infection Control Nurse is not available the Employee Health Nurse will counsel source patient on HIV testing or have another certified counselor do so. Provides post‐exposure blood/body fluid counseling/testing/follow‐up for employees of various contracted agencies.
Quality Assurance participates in Q.A. activities as established with Director of Human Resources and Q.A. Coordinator; monitors compliance and prepare appropriate reports. Contacts and schedules each hospital employee annually for physical examination and conducts initial exam, including:
a) Administration of appropriate vaccinations and tests.
b) Completion of updated history.
c) Referral of unusual problems to physician.
d) Other procedures as required by policy. Maintains close contact with employees off work on disability or workmen’s compensation (and their physicians) to facilitate their earliest possible return to work. Performs disposal respirator fit testing for physicians, O.R., Endoscopy and Home Care Staff. Instructs department managers in use of PAPR (Power Pak Respirator) for all other employees Reviews all incident reports involving employees injured at work and coordinates loss prevention program with the hospital’s Safety Program. Functions as an active member of the Infection Control Committee, the Ergonomic Team and the Safety Committee; may also assist the Education Department in providing in‐service education programs for employee groups. Provides periodic checks of blood pressure, weight, and other health problems for employees as requested.
