Medical Assistant II - MCU Ambulatory Float (50% -100%)

University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a 50% -100% Medical Assistant II to work within the Main Campus Ambulatory Float Pool.

Summary

Under direct supervision of LIP (licensed independent practitioner), RN (registered nurse), NM/ANM (nurse manager/assistant nurse manager) or other licensed designee, functions as a member of the patient care team. Performs technical, patient care and related clerical functions in the urgent care setting by coordinating all elements of the patient visit.

Duties To Include

  • Staff will support our Ambulatory Clinic patients.
  • Responsible for facilitating the smooth flow of patients through the clinic through interaction with patients, families, and staff.
  • Assist in clinic with physical examination of patient and related treatments, including but not limited to patient history, medication records, allergies, and immunizations.
  • Manages internal and external medical records to ensure that accurate and complete data is available for patient appointments.
  • Administers routine oral, rectal, or injectable medications not requiring a high level of skill or nursing judgment. These are medications that can only be administered by certified medical assistants or medical assistants who have completed a formal accredited training program.
  • Performs routine laboratory tests such as urinalysis and blood work
  • Performs patient care related to vital signs, reviewing medications, allergies, lab draws, setting up and assisting with minor procedures, in-clinic treatments, point of care testing, removing staples and/or sutures, assisting with dressing changes, administering immunizations as ordered, and other duties as assigned.
  • Takes and uploads photos of wounds and Plastic Surgery Reconstruction.
  • Setting up sterile field and assisting with Plastics and General Surgery minor procedures.
  • Stocks room with appropriate medical supplies and appropriate linens.
  • Provides psychological support to the patient and family based on assessed needs.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings.
  • Identifies vaccination needs for specific patient populations.
  • Performs related clerical tasks including answering phones, and providing information to other departments.
  • Treats matters with confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.
  • Demonstrates consideration and respect for patients, families, and co-workers always.
  • Completes on-line and in-service education programs annually and as required/offered.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • Certification OR registration as a Medical Assistant OR completion of a recognized one-year Medical Assistant Program, OR
  • Completion of a health care profession program with a curriculum incorporating elements of a Medical Assistant program including but not limited to pathophysiology, medical terminology, basic pharmacology and medication administration including dose calculation and psychology (include educational transcripts during application process)
  • Minimum 6 months Medical Assistant experience

Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms. Utilizes necessary equipment with appropriate safety measures, with required training and check off prior to use. Reports problems or concerns with equipment to the Clinic Care Director or Supervisor. Understands and demonstrates appropriate infection control practices in accordance with the Organization’s policy. Demonstrates ethical conduct and practices. May be exposed to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations to include performing emergency patient care. Responds appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with immediate supervisor. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of chemical Safety Data Sheets (SDS), equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics. Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements. Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization's values. Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization. Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required by management, be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards. WORK ENVIRONMENT The professional in this position reports to the Director of Operations. The person in this position will work closely with other Samaritan professionals within various departments to include, but not limited to the Physician Offices, Lab, Pharmacy, Radiology, etc. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. License: Active Washington state Medical Assistant – Certified license. Experience : Experience working in a clinic setting providing support to providers in medical specialties preferred. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Frequent prolonged standing/walking. Occasional lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling. Occasional heavy lifting (lift/carry up to 50 lbs.). Maneuver and/or transfer patients. Manual dexterity and mobility. Ability to read and understand patient charts, provider orders, tests results, etc. Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.
