Key Responsibilities

  • Interview patients to collect medical information and measure vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Record medical history, vital statistics, and test results accurately in electronic medical records.
  • Collect and prepare blood, tissue, or other specimens for laboratory testing.
  • Assist physicians during patient examinations, ensuring all instruments and materials are readily available.
  • Prepare and maintain treatment rooms by ensuring cleanliness and restocking supplies.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, and manage contaminated supplies following safety protocols.
  • Conduct phone consultations with patients regarding test results and health concerns.
  • Process specimens with proper labeling and prepare them for lab pickups.
  • Perform phlebotomy and other diagnostic tests as required.
  • Administer medications, including oral, intramuscular, SubQ, and topical, as ordered by the provider.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all patient care activities.
  • Stock exam rooms with necessary supplies, check for expired items, and manage waste appropriately.
  • Participate in OSHA compliance programs and contribute to performance improvement initiatives.
  • Foster a respectful and courteous environment for patients and staff alike.
  • Collaborate within a primary care medical home model to deliver comprehensive care.
  • Attend safety training programs and adhere to established safety protocols.
  • Maintain work areas and equipment in compliance with Legacy and governmental standards.
  • Report any safety concerns promptly and follow exposure control plans as required.
  • Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment to ensure a safe work environment.
  • Participate in annual education programs and take on other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • BLS/CPR Certification required
  • Up to one year experience
  • Excellent communication skills and customer service skills.
  • Basic front desk, clerical or healthcare support specialist skills/experience
  • Ability to work with clinical staff, works well under pressure, and multitask within a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to the concepts of preventive health care and team approach to health care delivery
  • Experience working with computers
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish required. 
  • Phlebotomy skills preferred
  • Experience with electronic medical records, preferred.

Medical Assistant / Interventional Radiology - West Houston

The Medical Assistant role at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center supports ambulatory clinical operations within the Interventional Radiology Dept at our West Houston location. This role is essential to delivering high-quality patient care by assisting clinical staff, supporting patient flow, and maintaining a safe and efficient care environment. The Medical Assistant works closely with registered nurses, medical licensed practitioners, physicians, and clinic leadership to ensure patients receive timely, accurate, and compassionate care. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. As part of UT MD Anderson, the Medical Assistant contributes directly to the institution's mission by supporting patient-centered care in an outpatient setting. The Medical Assistant position plays a key role in daily clinic operations while upholding standards of safety, confidentiality, and service excellence. The Medical Assistant is expected to demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail, and effective communication in all interactions. The ideal candidate for the Medical Assistant role has the education, experience, and training needed to support ambulatory patient care, including taking vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living, and performing delegated clinical and administrative tasks under nursing supervision. Experience in a clinical or outpatient setting, familiarity with patient flow processes, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients and clinical staff are well suited for this role. The primary purpose of the Medical Assistant position is to act as a lead assistant in preparing patients for Melanoma Surgery, Melanoma Medical & Dermatology, appointments and assisting with procedures. Medical Assistants perform direct patient care in a dynamic, high-volume environment. There is involvement in all technical aspects of dermatological procedures to ensure continuity of care and maximum efficiency of the area. Consistently demonstrates appropriate knowledge of basic procedural supplies specific to Melanoma & Dermatology. Key Functions Assists Staff: Responsibilities include completion of routine patient care assignments. as delegated. Accurately record vital signs and other data, report abnormalities to nursing staff. Various administrative duties as delegated by the clinical team and/or nursing leadership. Assists Patients: Aids in completion of activities of daily living, mobilization, greeting, rooming, and vital signs on all patients registered in clinic. Reports to RN/MLP/MD any vital sign falling outside of normal parameters. Observe for any unusual signs/symptoms that may need attention prior to appointment and reports to RN/MLP/MD appropriately. Records height, weight, oxygen saturation, and presence of pain on progress note. Assist with any procedures, or administrative tasks, under RN supervision. Work Environment: Maintains environment in a clean, safe, and orderly manner. Stock and maintain unit and patient care supplies and equipment. Ensures area of patient responsibility is filled out prior to rooming patient. Checks expiration dates of all dated supplies and discard or return per institutional guidelines. Maintain processing rooms, including sterile processing, High Level Disinfection, quality control, logs, etc. Equipment Usage & Safety Preparedness: Maintains expectations for safety preparedness, including but not limited to: Orientation to new equipment, Employee Education Event, CPR training, fire drills.
