The Medical Assistant role at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center supports ambulatory clinical operations within the Interventional Radiology Dept at our West Houston location. This role is essential to delivering high-quality patient care by assisting clinical staff, supporting patient flow, and maintaining a safe and efficient care environment. The ideal candidate for the Medical Assistant role has the education, experience, and training needed to support ambulatory patient care, including taking vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living, and performing delegated clinical and administrative tasks under nursing supervision. Experience in a clinical or outpatient setting, familiarity with patient flow processes, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients and clinical staff are well suited for this role. Licenses, certifications, and additional qualifications are based on institutional requirements as outlined below.

Responsibilities

Assists Staff

  • Complete routine patient care assignments as delegated by clinical staff
  • Accurately record vital signs and other patient data
  • Report abnormal findings to nursing staff promptly
  • Perform various administrative duties as delegated by the clinical team or nursing leadership

Assists Patients

  • Assist with activities of daily living, mobilization, greeting, rooming, and obtaining vital signs for all registered clinic patients
  • Report vital signs outside of normal parameters to the RN, medical licensed practitioner, or physician
  • Observe for unusual signs or symptoms prior to appointments and report findings appropriately
  • Record height, weight, oxygen saturation, and pain presence in the progress note
  • Assist with procedures and administrative tasks under RN supervision

Work Environment

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly patient care environment
  • Stock and maintain unit and patient care supplies and equipment
  • Ensure patient responsibility areas are completed prior to rooming patients
  • Maintain proper room stock of linen, forms, and supplies
  • Check expiration dates of dated supplies and discard or return items per institutional guidelines
  • Maintain processing rooms, including sterile processing, high-level disinfection, quality control, and required logs

Effective Communication

  • Escalate significant patient care events and concerns to appropriate nursing staff
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of patient information at all times
  • Remove and document voicemail messages as delegated by the RN or Nurse Manager
  • Assist in the reception area as needed by answering telephones, documenting information, and distributing messages to appropriate staff

EDUCATION

  • Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent and
  • Preferred: Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program including externship/practicum. or
  • Preferred: Graduate of a U.S. Military medical services training program.

Work Experience

  • Required: 1 year Medical Assistant experience. or
  • Required: No experience required with completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program (including externship/practicum) or U.S. Military medical training.
