The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for performing routine clinical and administrative tasks. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications. Administrative duties may include answering phone calls, registering new patients, scheduling appointments, and collecting and posting fees. The float MA must be adaptable and comfortable to work in different environments and be willing to cover at any location within the organization with minimal notice.

Responsibilities: WORK HOURS WILL VARY DEPENDING ON ASSIGNMENT. 

  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and confirm purpose of visit.
  • Copy immunization cards of all new children or, if none available in chart, of established patients.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms stocked, neat and clean.
  • Sterilize instruments following sterilization guidelines and maintain accurate logs.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for examination by performing preliminary physical tests; and taking blood pressure, height, weight, and temperature.
  • Record patients' medical history, vital signs, and information such as test results in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Assist medical staff in examining and treating patients, handing them instruments and materials, or performing such tasks as giving injections and removing sutures.
  • Perform various laboratory procedures to include urine analysis, cultures, immunization, Hgb, lead levels and EKGs.
  • Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
  • Perform respiratory treatments, injections, and immunizations according to TrueCare protocols or standing orders.
  • Change dressings on wounds.
  • Secure patient information and maintain patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, and physicians' instructions to patients.
  • Discharge patients from visit per patient discharge protocols.
  • Schedule appointments for patients, as needed.
  • Refer calls to medical staff when appropriate for emergency or medical questions.
  • Perform front desk duties including but not limited to registering and checking-in patients and answering phones.
  • Work on special projects including but not limited to conducting patient follow-up, supporting population health initiatives, updating patient records, word processing of patient correspondence, and completing insurance forms.
  • Travel to any location to provide support coverage.
  • Adjust responsibilities based on assigned provider and/or health center/department needs.
  • Accommodate schedule and/or location changes with minimal notice.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant Program.
  • Minimum One (1) year Medical Assistant work experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, medical laboratory procedures and healthcare operations and workflow.
  • Will be required to drive to other locations daily as required.  Must have a current CA Driver's License for at least 3 years, have current insurance, and a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Associate's degree in healthcare related courses.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (may be required at some clinics).
  • Six (6) months experience with documentation in an EHR system.
  • Phlebotomy training.

The pay range for this role is $27.83 - $38.96 on an hourly basis.
