Mom/Baby Unit

Mom & Baby is a 28-bed unit within Women and Children’s Health, caring for post-partum patients after delivery, as well as their newborns. There are typically 300 deliveries per month. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6 - 8, and a CNA in the nursery. Mom/baby nurses also act as “admit” RNs for all infants transferred to the Mom & Baby unit. Nurses take care of many babies whose status does not require NICU care, but who are not yet ready to go home. Mom/Baby nurses may periodically care for a number of GYN patients.

Job Summary

The Charge Nurse, with minimal direction, supervises nursing and support staff in an inpatient unit, specialty clinic, or treatment programs in various patient care settings.

The Charge Nurse, adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of professional nursing and performance, and the ANA Code of Ethics (2015) to provide care to all patients. Applies critical thinking, evidence-based policies, procedures, guidelines and competence to collaborate with the health care team to promote excellence in patient safety and quality outcomes. Utilizes the Theory of Human Caring and Caritas in daily practice. "Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, Founder / Director, Watson Caring Science Institute."

Essential Functions:

  • Operations Management
  • Oversee department/unit for assigned shift employing clinical and managerial skills to care for patients while also providing guidance and leadership to other nurses who are working with patients including but not limited to
  • preparing daily staffing assignments, mentoring staff, evaluating performance, facilitating patient flow, admissions, and discharges. (40%)
  • Patient Assessment
  • Assess the needs of individuals, families and/or communities to identify potential health or safety problems, Instruct individuals and families on health education and disease prevention and after care (20%)
  • Treatment and Evaluation
  • Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care. Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity, develop and modify patient care plans as indicated by patient’s responses and conditions. Prepare patients for, and assist with examinations and treatments (20%)
  • Medication administration, documentation and reassessment (10%)
  • Monitor, record and report symptoms and changes in patient’s condition and vital signs (10%)

Education:

  • Associate's Degree Required

Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years Professional nursing experience in a patient care setting. Required

Licenses:

  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross required
  • RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Required within 6 months of hire

Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing required. Master's in Nursing preferred. Experience: 3 to 5 years of demonstrated leadership experience required (Charge Nurse, Educator or other leadership development preparation). License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Current Registered Nurse License (RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact Registered Nurse (eNLC)) with established residency within 6 months. Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire. Nursing specialty or leadership certification(s) preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of academic medical center structure, service-line structures, institutional governance and hierarchy of decision process. Skills in planning, coordinating and measuring departmental activities. Demonstrated business acumen and managerial functions such as experience with performance improvement tools, using metrics to drive decisions, maintain a budget, report writing and solve practical problems. Ability to leverage resources, including technology, to manage multiple competing priorities and deliver on organizational goals. Knowledge of industry standards to aid strategic decisions, problem solve and calculate risk. Ability to think creatively and strategically to successfully mediate with individuals/groups. Cognizant of unconscious and systemic bias in care delivery and business operations. Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles to cooperation and to foster harmonious relations. Ability to maintain integrity and trust among leadership and staff. Proven ability to lead and motivate individuals, groups/cross-functional teams and provide project management support.
