Position Overview

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) will administer anesthesia, monitor patient's vital signs, and oversee patient recovery from anesthesia. The Nurse Anesthetist may assist surgeons or other physicians.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manage patients' airway or pulmonary status using techniques such as endotracheal intubation and extubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, and respiratory therapy.
  • Select, prepare, or use equipment which monitors / supplies drugs for the administration of anesthetics.
  • Select, order, and administer anesthetics, adjuvant drugs, accessory drugs or fluids.
  • Perform pre-anesthetic screenings including physical evaluations and patient interviews, and documents results.
  • Monitor patient responses including skin color, pupil dilation, pulse, heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, ventilation, or urine output using invasive and noninvasive techniques.
  • Respond to emergency situations by providing airway management, administering emergency fluids or drugs, or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Develop anesthesia care plans.
  • Obtain informed consent from patients for anesthesia procedures.
  • Assess patients' medical histories to predict anesthesia response.
  • Perform or manage regional anesthetic techniques such as local, spinal, epidural, caudal, nerve blocks and intravenous blocks.
  • Evaluate patients' post-surgical or post-anesthesia responses, taking appropriate corrective actions or requesting consultation if complications occur. Administers post-anesthesia medications or fluids to support patients' cardiovascular systems.
  • Discharge patients from post-anesthesia care.
  • Read literature, talk with colleagues, and participate in professional organizations or conferences to keep abreast of developments in anesthesia.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Advanced understanding of anesthesia and other critical nursing skills.
  • Demonstrated patient care skills.
  • Ability to practice independently
  • Can show competence within Anesthesia Clinical Privileges

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate of an accredited nurse anesthesia education program.
  • Currently has a CRNA license in Montana (or obtains prior to the start date).
  • Two years of CRNA experience required.
  • Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) credential.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications are required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods standing, reaching, and bending.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50pounds at times.
  • Physical strength and agility to position patients.
  • Must have good vision, hearing, and communication skills.
  • Must be free of any ambulatory impairment or restrictions
  • Must be able to respond to different parts of the facility for emergencies and codes.
