Mom/Baby Unit

Mom & Baby is a 28-bed unit within Women and Children’s Health, caring for post-partum patients after delivery, as well as their newborns. There are typically 300 deliveries per month. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6 - 8, and a CNA in the nursery. Mom/baby nurses also act as “admit” RNs for all infants transferred to the Mom & Baby unit. Nurses take care of many babies whose status does not require NICU care, but who are not yet ready to go home. Mom/Baby nurses may periodically care for a number of GYN patients.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, the professional nurse adheres to the American Nurses Association (ANA) standards of professional nursing and performance, and the ANA Code of Ethics to provide care to all healthcare consumers. Applies critical thinking, evidence-based practices and competence to collaborate with the health care team to promote excellence in healthcare consumer safety and quality outcomes. Utilizes the Theory of Human Caring and Caritas in daily practice.

Essential Functions:

  • Lactation consults for term and preterm newborns. (20%)
  • This is a lactation position; this role will not be expected to perform bedside nursing care. (20%)
  • Some weekend and Holiday coverage will be required. (20%)
  • Understanding policy and procedure related to basic newborn care, donor milk, and feeding routines. (20%)
  • Responsible for inpatient consultation, educational classes, educating antepartum, postpartum and high risk patient population about benefits of breastfeeding, follow up phone calls and occasional outpatient consults. (10%)
  • Providing support to provider/RN peers. (10%)

Education:

  • Associate's Degree Required

Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years bedside RN experience Required and
  • 1-3 years CLC experience preferred (this can occur coupled with RN experience).

Licenses:

  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required and
  • RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required
  • CLC-Certified Lactation Counselor - ALPP - Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice Required

Job Description The practice of nursing requires specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills to provide care to groups and individuals. A MSN or DNP are not required but supersede the requirement for the BSN. YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: None required REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: The RN demonstrates the knowledge, abilities, and skills to provide age and culturally specific patient care and education. Job Summary The Registered Nurse at North Mississippi Health Services Systems is responsible for providing safe, quality patient care using the nursing process, maintaining effective communication with the multidisciplinary team, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. The role requires leadership skills in prioritizing, delegating, and evaluating work assignments, as well as effective problem-solving abilities to respond to changing patient needs. Job Functions Clinical Practice: Uses the nursing process to provide safe, quality patient care and document accordingly. Works to ensure his/her compliance with all NMHS policies and requirements as directed by the Nurse Manager and Educator. Education Provides patient/family education and acts as a resource for existing staff and new employees. Can participate in the Preceptor class to ensure proper training of new employees. Communication Maintains communication with multidisciplinary team members to provide holistic care to the patient. Attends daily huddles on each unit to ensure proper assignments and identify team members for the shift. Customer Relations Projects caring, friendly and helpful image to patients and other customers. Utilized the patient’s communication board (white board) to identify name, date, goals, other staff and procedures or test for the day to keep the patients and families informed. Complies by the NMHS behavioral standards. Self-Development Maintains competency by staying informed of changing trends in the nursing practice. Attends annual review and unit specifics within the department. Performs required continuing education hours online and in classroom. Regulatory Knowledge Complies with regulatory and accrediting agency requirements. Licensed by the board of Nursing for the state.
