Job Summary

Under direct supervision, assists cardiac surgical team before, during, and after case. Position is responsible for organizing and overseeing the daily work activities of the Surgical techs. Provides expert support, assistance and maintenance of instruments and equipment. Performs procedures in accordance with approved techniques and standards and ensures competency of staff. Other duties include: orientation and mentoring of staff, problem-solving instrument and equipment issues and providing feedback for employee evaluations.

Position Responsibilities

Demonstrates ability to perform, under general supervision, the most complex procedures, specific to each hospital, in accordance with specifications set by departmental leadership.

Contributes to physician, staff and patient satisfaction and exceptional care by assisting with room set up, turnover, equipment, and all clinical support throughout shift. Advises leadership team on matters related to promotion of quality and safe patient care.

Assists and advises team members with the following:

  • Set up of instruments, equipment, sterile table, case carts, supplies in preparation for procedures
  • Oversees instrument trays and inventory

Serves as a resource person to co-workers by providing functional support and direction with regard to surgical procedures performed in the department   

Assesses and assists with maintenance of Doctor Preference Cards, including updating as necessary

Monitors peers' performance and coaches as needed to assure policies and procedures are being followed, in collaboration with surgery leadership. Trains and orients surgical technologists and/or registered nurses, and provides formal feedback to surgical leadership and perioperative educator on progress of orientation.

Required Experience:

three (3) years of current operating room experience

Required Education:

High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required

Graduate of accredited school of Surgical Technology

Training / Certification / Licensure:

  • Surgical Technologist Certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistants (NBSTSA) and/or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
  • BLS certification required

Hourly Rate: $28.63 - $44.54 The actual salary/rate will vary based on applicant’s experience as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Candidates must have clinical experience via accredited CST program. The Surgical Technologist I is an integral member of the surgical team. The Technologist I works under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse/Circulating Nurse. He/she functions in a scrub role, providing assistance to the operating surgeon and assistants. He/she also provides assistance in preparations for procedures and the clean-up afterwards. This individual works collaboratively with the entire surgical team. What you will do Functions in “scrub” role during the various surgical procedures and provides assistance in all areas of patient care. Collaborates with RN and physicians in developing a plan of care for each patient. Collaborates with RN in maintaining a safe, organized, clean, and comfortable environment for patients. Scrubs for routine and complex procedures. Consistently demonstrates aseptic practice as defined in AORN Recommended Practices. Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy, procedures, instrumentation, equipment, and supplies by anticipating the surgical needs at the field. Assists physicians and RN with monitoring and ongoing assessments throughout the surgical procedure. Assists with transportation of patients, as needed. Assists physicians and RN with emergency situations. Exhibits proficiency in each of the surgical specialties that he/she works. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to expertly prepare and operate standard equipment (e.g. nitrogen powered drills, balancing of microscopes, basic audio-visual equipment) prior to and during the various specialty procedures.
