In this role, you will utilize the nursing process to provide high-quality patient care while collaborating with physicians, clinical staff, and other departments to ensure exceptional patient outcomes. Position Summary

The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care for assigned patients. The RN coordinates care across departments, communicates effectively with healthcare team members, and ensures compliance with established clinical, safety, and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and a patient-centered approach to care.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Clinical Excellence

  • Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Identify and address the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Develop, update, and maintain individualized care plans based on changing patient needs.
  • Administer medications safely and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Implement appropriate nursing interventions and assist physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Evaluate patient responses to treatment and document outcomes accurately.
  • Provide patient and family education, including discharge instructions, and document understanding and response.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, organized, and confidential patient documentation.

Care Coordination & Team Collaboration

  • Coordinate patient care activities with physicians, departments, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Communicate patient goals, changes in condition, and care plans effectively to the healthcare team.
  • Participate in patient referrals and care planning as needed.
  • Serve as a preceptor and resource for team members when assigned.
  • Assist in directing workflow and supporting departmental operations based on patient needs and staff capabilities.
  • Identify and resolve issues involving patients, families, physicians, staff, and equipment.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives that support excellent patient care outcomes.

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to medication administration and documentation policies, including narcotic accountability procedures.
  • Follow all policies related to incident reporting, sentinel events, confidentiality, and patient rights.
  • Comply with infection prevention and control guidelines.
  • Maintain a safe patient environment through proper identification procedures, fall prevention measures, restraint management, and department-specific safety protocols.
  • Follow hospital and departmental safety regulations, including emergency preparedness and environmental safety procedures.
  • Perform equipment safety checks and maintain quality control standards when applicable.
  • Protect patient and visitor property and uphold Mercy's standards for respectful care.

Clinical Skills & Technology

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the operation and maintenance of clinical equipment and procedures.
  • Assist physicians with diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
  • Perform technical skills relevant to the nursing practice area, including:
    • Rapid Strep testing
    • Urinalysis (UA) with dip
    • I-Stat testing
    • CBC via Coulter
    • Urine Pregnancy Testing
    • Urine Drug Screening (DOT and Non-DOT)
    • Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT)
  • Participate in the evaluation of new equipment, products, policies, procedures, and clinical standards.

Qualifications

Required

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Current RN License or RN Temporary Permit in the state of practice.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Additional certifications as required by department policy.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Preferred

  • Previous nursing experience in an acute care, clinic, or ambulatory setting.
  • Additional specialty certifications applicable to the practice area.
  • Experience working in a collaborative, team-based healthcare environment.
