In the Surgical Float Pool, you will work with diverse populations of patients in numerous surgical units, departments and/or locations while learning from many of our best caregivers. This position is fast-paced and constantly changing, so adaptability and flexibility are important. Still, you will find a solid, united culture, where caregivers continuously encourage each other to be their best and provide unparallel patient care.

As a Surgical Technologist, you will play a key role in delivering exceptional surgical care by working alongside registered nurses, surgeons, anesthesia providers, and other members of the surgical team. You will perform scrub duties, assist with circulating responsibilities under the direction of a Registered Nurse, maintain a sterile field, prepare supplies and equipment, pass instruments during procedures, and support sterilization processes after surgery. The operating room provides a structured, team-focused environment dedicated to safe, high-quality patient care. This role offers exposure to complex, high-acuity surgical cases, providing valuable hands-on experience to strengthen your technical skills and clinical knowledge. As you gain experience, you will improve your ability to anticipate surgeons' needs, enhance your sterile technique, and build confidence managing a variety of surgical procedures. This position is part of Cleveland Clinic’s Weekender Flex Program and will require you to work two 12-hour shifts per weekend and one 12-hour shift during the week. While you are only working 36 hours a week, Cleveland Clinic will pay you for 44 hours of work and give you full-time status and benefits. This schedule allows caregivers to enjoy personal time during the week with family and friends and take care of any errands that will not interfere with a typical day shift schedule.

A caregiver in this position works weekend days (Saturday and Sunday) + one day/night shift from 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. Orientation will be 3 months Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).

Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available.

Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery.

Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients.

Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure.

Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.”

Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition.
If in an Ambulatory setting the following duties may be assigned:
Coordinates surgical and clinical schedules.
Assists with outpatient clinic flow.
Provides information to patient and family.
Assists with coordinating outpatient procedure room cases and supplies.
Assists with marketing and practice development and orientation of new hires.
Coordinates studies for section.
Answers patient phone calls, gathers information and relays to provider.
Performs post-op phone to patient based on provider instruction and relays information to provider.
Scribes for provider in outpatient clinic.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CCAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) OR Certification as a Surgical Technologist (TS-C or CST) OR completion of a military Surgical Technology Program OR state license as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

Surgical Technologist Certification from an accredited Surgical Technology Program
Experience working in the OR
Scrubbing experience

Physical Requirements:

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and ability to push, pull, and navigate supply carts weighing > than 75 pounds periodically.

In this hands-on role, you will collaborate with surgeons and registered nurses while supporting advanced surgical procedures within our Neuro/Spine OR. Your expertise, precision and commitment to excellence will directly impact the care of patients throughout their surgical journey. As a Surgical Technologist, responsibilities include preparing the operating room, ensuring sterile supplies and equipment are available, setting up and maintaining the sterile field, performing surgical counts, assisting with gowning and gloving of surgical team members, draping patients, participating in surgical timeouts, maintaining aseptic technique throughout procedures, and properly collecting and handling surgical specimens. Surgical Technologist – Neuro/Spine OR Responsibilities Include: Set up and maintain the sterile field, ensuring appropriate supplies, medications and equipment are available for procedures. Assist the RN with accurate counts of sponges, instruments and other surgical items at required intervals. Assist surgical team members with gowning, gloving and patient preparation. Maintain aseptic technique and support a safe surgical environment throughout procedures. Participate in intraoperative surgical timeouts to promote patient safety. Collect, identify and label specimens obtained during procedures and provide them to the circulator for appropriate handling. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Completion of a military surgical technology program meets the educational requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program. Certification required for candidates who have not completed an accredited Surgical Technology program: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Certified Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross.
