Registered Nurse/RN - Oncology Unit 2 SE

Overview

Our newly reopened Oncology Unit is a 16-bed unit dedicated to our patients with a variety of cancer diagnoses. Nurses in this area have a 1:5 ratio and specialize in the administration of chemotherapy. Our multidisciplinary team of oncologists, nurses, pharmacists, and support staff are not only skilled and knowledgeable, but are also deeply compassionate while working together to bring patients with cancer specialized nursing care. This unit diligently seeks to provide an optimal healing environment for each patient and their family in their unique journey. 

Responsibilities

Plans, coordinates and directs quality, compassionate care by maintaining standards of professional nursing practice and creating positive therapeutic relationships with patients/families.  Supervises LPNs, PCAs, PCAs/US, US, Ortho Techs and other non-licensed staff.

  • Assesses condition on each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis to include but not limited to the patient’s physical condition, psychological status, social status, spiritual and cultural needs, pain assessment/management, nutritional and functional status, developmental or age related factors, and discharge planning needs.
  • Plans, provides, and documents patient and/or significant other education based on physical, behavioral, psychological, developmental, and age-related factors, after identifying barriers to learning.
  • Evaluates and regularly reevaluates patient care; coordinates care planning with patient, family, providers and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
  • Assigns and delegates nursing care to team members in accordance with the patient’s needs and the capabilities of the team members.
  • Applies safety principles when performing care. 
  • Accurately documents observations, care provided and changes in care plan.
  • Provides accurate handoff reports and participates in unit based huddles
  • Assists in performance improvement (PI) activities by serving on PI teams as warranted, assisting with PI measures and supporting and implementing changes necessary for improvement.
  • Performs initial and annual competency per job class.

    Qualifications

    Current Alabama RN license required. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider training required.  Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

     

    Acute Care – Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Cardiac/Critical Care – Current AHA BLS and AHA ACLS required.

    Emergency Department – Current AHA BLS, AHA ACLS, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC).

    Perioperative – Current AHA BLS and AHA ACLS required.

    Additionally:

    PACU – AHA PALS required

    Prep & Discharge/Post-Surgical – Does not require ACLS. 

    Rehab – Current AHA BLS required.

    Job Description Registered Nurse (RN) – Surgical Oncology Physician Practice Position Summary The Registered Nurse (RN) is a vital member of the multidisciplinary surgical oncology team, providing comprehensive nursing care to patients throughout the continuum of surgical cancer treatment. The RN collaborates closely with surgeons, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, and ancillary staff to coordinate patient care, provide education, facilitate treatment planning, and ensure exceptional clinical outcomes. This role requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, compassion, and the ability to manage complex patient needs in a fast-paced outpatient setting. Essential Duties And Responsibilities Clinical Care Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and triage patients in person and by telephone. Evaluate patient symptoms and determine appropriate interventions or escalation of care. Monitor patients before and after office-based procedures. Review laboratory, pathology, and imaging results, communicating findings and provider recommendations to patients. Coordinate preoperative and postoperative care for surgical oncology patients. Identify urgent clinical concerns and facilitate timely evaluation and treatment. Patient Education Educate patients and caregivers regarding: Surgical procedures Preoperative preparation Postoperative recovery Wound care and drain management Medication management Nutrition and activity restrictions Signs and symptoms requiring immediate medical attention Reinforce physician treatment plans and ensure patient understanding. Maintain accurate medication reconciliation and allergy documentation. Process medication refills according to practice protocols. Complete disability forms, FMLA paperwork, and other clinical documentation as appropriate. Telephone Triage Assess patient concerns using evidence-based triage guidelines. Provide clinical advice within scope of practice. Escalate urgent or emergent concerns to the provider. Document all patient communications in the EMR. Quality and Compliance Maintain compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, CMS, and organizational policies. Participate in quality improvement initiatives. Assist with infection prevention and patient safety activities. Maintain current nursing licensure and required certifications.
