Position Summary:

Responsible for planning and preparing for the surgical procedure and assisting the surgeon.  Responsible for sterilization of surgical equipment and to assemble scheduled and emergency case carts.                                 

 

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates correct Materials Management (instruments, sponges, needles, etc.)
  • Displays various transfer techniques with sharps, as needed.
  • Counting of surgical objects as required per policy.
  • Accountability and care of surgical specimens.
  • Consistently practices procedures to protect self and others and adheres to OSHA exposure plan guidelines.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the surgery environment.
  • Using the correct Personal Protective Equipment as needed.
  • Having and practicing the skills necessary to function within all surgery specialties. (Ortho, Neuro, General, Vascular, OB/GYN, Plastic, Cysto, Uro and Opth.
  • Scrubs for operative procedures demonstrating good aseptic technique, knowledge of perioperative safety and infection control guidelines, and appropriate handling of instruments, suture, and specimens.
  • Demonstrates competency in assisting the nurse in the care of the patient by assisting with patient prep, patient positioning, and transportation of the patient.

Qualifications

Certified Requirements: 

  • Certification as a surgical technologist (CST) required.
  • 1-2 years of scrubbing experience in an operating room setting.  
  • BLS certification required.
  • Good communication skills. 
  • Basic computer skills required.

Non Certified Requirements:

  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • BLS required.
  • Surgical technology preparation and/or experience in operating room technique required.
  • Nurse Aide experience is a preferred.

Department Overview Children’s – Minnetonka is a multi-specialty ambulatory surgery center consisting of five operating rooms. Position Summary The Surgical Technologist is an integral member of the patient care team. Job Requirements POSITION SUMMARY To be fully engaged in providing Quality/No Harm, Customer Experience, and Stewardship by performing a variety of technical activities related to patient care, as well as support activities in the operating room under the direction of a registered nurse. PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES Performs a variety of duties in an operating room observing proper techniques to include preparing rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment; open sterile supplies and arrange sterile setups for operations. Creates, maintains, and terminates sterile field for surgical procedures. Properly handles and cares for all instruments and equipment. Checks materials and equipment for proper functioning and adequacy; reports faulty equipment and instruments per policy. Assists with precepting new technical personnel. Attends in-services and mandatory meetings. Cooperates with the nurse in the individualized plan of care for each patient. Anticipates needs of surgeon and surgical assistants in the operating room, passing instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies needed in an operative procedure. Demonstrates an ability to perform all duties required of a Surgical Technologist in accordance with established procedures and completion of skills check list.
