Associate Chief Nursing Officer - Advanced Practice Providers

The Associate Chief Nursing Officer for Advanced Practice Providers (ACNO) is a transformational, visionary leader that successfully manages the organization-wide strategy and integration of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) within the overall University of Miami Health System (UHealth). A key objective for the ACNO is to ensure industry standard APP practice and implementation of best practices across UHealth. The ACNO will manage the Office of Advanced Practice Providers and develop mission critical APP initiatives and programming. The ACNO will directly manage the Directors of Advanced Practice who oversee the APPs in various specialty service lines including, Cancer, Ambulatory (including Primary Care and Specialty Care), Inpatient, and Emergency Care. Practicing outstanding performance management skills, they will cultivate and foster an empowered and engaged workforce by establishing and maintaining a practice environment consistent with UHealth’s commitment to patient-centered care, new knowledge and innovation, team collaboration, and evidence-based practice. By building collaborative relationships with multiple counterparts and key stakeholders, including physician, nursing, and administrative leadership, the ACNO will ensure the advancement of organizational goals, programs, and projects. The incumbent provides administrative leadership and professional practice guidance for all Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), Physician Assistants (PA), and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) in collaboration with UHealth Chief Nursing Officer, Ambulatory and Inpatient Chief Medical Officers and nursing and physician leaders.

Develops and executes a comprehensive plan to align APP practice across the system to support and advance UHealth’s strategic goals and operational needs. Provides leadership and utilizes business development skills to accomplish the mission, goals, and strategic plans of the inpatient and outpatient patient care divisions. Initiates and maintains an organizational structure for the APPs and creates a culture that facilitates collaboration and participation. Evaluates current APP service lines to ensure APPs are practicing within the full scope of their license and makes recommendations to service line leaders on process and quality improvement. Innovates and supports programming to maximize the APP in progressive new models of health care delivery at the top of their license and collaborates with key stakeholders, including but not limited to the UHealth Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), in developing and evaluating value-based care delivery models which support the health delivery and finance system strategy. Provides leadership and guidance in the development of performance metrics and the measurement reporting process for APPs. Promotes patient-centric care through mentoring of APPs and the application of evidence-based practices and approaches. Creates and executes a strategy for expansion of APPs to new sites, and for the growth of new and existing service lines. Collaborates with APP leaders to formulate policies and procedures consistent with recognized standards of professional practice. Reviews and develops onboarding requirements for new APPs and ongoing educational opportunities for existing APPs. Participates in the creation of collaborative agreement protocols, and the credentialing and recredentialing of APPs, including reviewing past cases, gaining feedback from sponsoring physicians, and ensuring quality standards are met. Provides expertise on staffing standards and participates in the creation of protocols, and the credentialing and recredentialing of APPs. Partners with Human Resources on employee/labor relations cases involving APPs, and acts as the subject matter expert on APP practice for the purpose of determining corrective action. Collaborates with the UM School of Nursing leadership team on recruitment efforts, creation of residency programs, and encouragement of APP employees to gain adjunct faculty positions. Collaborates with the Professional Practice Department to align Magnet standards with APP practice. Reviews APP compliance with documentation and billing standards. Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local APP-related laws, regulations, and rules, including but not limited to CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), the Joint Commission, the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), the Florida Department of Health, and other regulatory bodies. Maintains knowledge of industry trends and local/state/federal legislation to manage and reduce legal risks. Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Education:

Master’s Degree in Nursing.

Doctoral of Nursing Practice Degree preferred.

Certification and Licensing:

Florida Advanced Practice Registered Nurse license.

Experience:  

Minimum 5 years of experience

Five plus years of experience in leadership
