Registered Nurse Float Pool Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse (RN) – Float Pool provides professional nursing care to patients across multiple inpatient clinical areas based on organizational staffing needs. Float Pool RNs are highly skilled clinicians who possess strong critical thinking skills, clinical adaptability, and the ability to provide safe, evidence-based care in a variety of patient care settings.

Float Pool nurses are assigned to departments based on demonstrated competency, patient acuity, and operational needs. Assignments are made within the RN's validated competencies and in accordance with Day Kimball Health policies, staffing guidelines, and regulatory standards.

Float Pool RNs serve as a flexible clinical resource, supporting patient care while maintaining continuity, quality outcomes, and exceptional customer service.

Registered Nurse Float Pool Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct patient care utilizing the nursing process, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Accepts assignments in designated clinical areas based on demonstrated competency and current staffing needs.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate patient care.
  • Documents patient care accurately and timely within the electronic medical record.
  • Maintains patient safety and adheres to infection prevention, regulatory, and organizational standards.
  • Demonstrates flexibility by transitioning between assigned units while maintaining high-quality patient care.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives and department-based education.
  • Serves as a clinical resource while promoting teamwork and collaboration across departments.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.


Registered Nurse Float Pool Experience and Education Qualifications:

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.


Licensure

  • Current Connecticut Registered Nurse license or holds a multi-state Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
  • Current BLS certification required for the Float Pool role.
  • Current ACLS certification required for the Float Pool role.
  • Additional specialty certifications are required when applicable to the assigned unit or clinical area.


Experience

  • Minimum of two-three (2-3) years of recent acute care nursing experience required.
  • Experience in Medical-Surgical nursing required.
  • Progressive Care, Telemetry, ICU, Emergency Department, and/or Maternal Child Health preferred based on assigned float areas.


Approved Float Assignments:

Float Pool RNs may be assigned to the following units following successful completion of orientation and competency validation.

  • Medical-Surgical
  • Telemetry
  • Maternal Child Health
  • Emergency Department


Registered Nurse Float Pool Cross-Training & Competency Requirements

Float Pool RNs must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for each clinical area in which they are assigned. RNs may only accept assignments within their current validated competencies and required certifications.

Requirements include:

  • Completion of department-specific orientation.
  • Successful completion of all competency checklists.
  • Satisfactory preceptor evaluations.
  • Annual competency validation for each assigned specialty.
  • Minimum of two (2) worked shifts per month in each assigned clinical area to maintain competency and eligibility to float to that area. (Experience may be outside DKH)
  • Maintenance of all required certifications.


Required certifications:

  • BLS — required.
  • ACLS — required.
  • PALS — recommended/preferred; not required unless specifically assigned and competency validated for a role requiring PALS.
  • NRP — required when assigned to Maternal Child Health responsibilities requiring NRP.
  • NIH Stroke Scale — required when required by the assigned clinical area.
  • Other certifications — required as applicable to the assigned clinical area.


Additional unit assignments may be approved following successful completion of orientation and competency validation.

Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Current Massachusetts Nursing licensure and registration. 2. Current unrestricted Driver’s license. 3. BLS is a requirement for every RN unless an advance certification is current (ex ACLS, PALS, NRP). In addition, unit specific certification and competencies are defined in the Unit Profile. Preferred: 1. Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. Experience/Skills: Required: 1. Minimum 5 year’s Nursing experience. 2. Thorough knowledge of the discipline of Nursing. Preferred: 1. Homecare or Telehealth experience. 2. Phlebotomy, IV insertion and telemetry experience. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions: Work is considered heavy. Position requires travel from operations center to local hospitals and patient residences with primary work being indoors in an alternative patient care environment.
