Job Description

Under the supervision of the UCSF Primary Care Administrative Nurse Manager, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, the Hospital Assistant II assists in the delivery of care to patients at UCSF Primary Care.The Hospital Assistant II will be primarily responsible for the members of their primary care teamlet as well as providing back up support to other teamlets. The Hospital Assistant II will play a critical role in the patient experience including optimizing clinic flow, providing in and outreach to patients and working collaboratively with the team to create a patient centered environment. This position floats between the front and the back office performing both clerical and clinical duties. Work includes a variety of personal care and nursing care procedures including assuring positive care outcomes. S/he will perform assigned patient care and laboratory procedures in support of services provided to patients within the practices. S/he is required to learn and be able to assist in all functions of the practices to include back and front office. The Hospital Assistant II consistently projects a professional and courteous demeanor, helps establish and maintain the highest service standards for the practice and complies with the Medical Center House and Telephone Standards. The MA must have flexibility to cover multiple UCSF medical center primary care clinic sites.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATION

  • Certification from an approved Medical Assistant program; or equivalent combination of training and experience
  • High School graduation and two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification
  • Demonstrated computer familiarity, keyboard skills, computer literate in programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel required
  • Willingness to learn new computer programs as needed to sustain practice operations
  • Willingness to obtain CPT I Certified (CPT-1 certification current with the State of California) within 6 months of hire

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION REQUIRED QUALIFICATION

  • Two or more years of experience as a Hospital Assistant in a medical practice.
  • Familiarity with Epic
  • CPT 1 Certified (CPT-1 certification current with the State of California)

Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification
  • CPT-1 Certification required for Primary Care departments
    • ****If applicant does not have a CPT-1, they will be hired as Hospital Assistant II and will be reclassified to a Hospital Assistant 3 once they receive CPT-1 certification with the State of California

Position Summary Serve as a patient advocate during patient exam and treatment Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height Show patients to examination rooms, procedure rooms or operative rooms and prepare them for the physician Record patients' medical history, medications, allergies, vital statistics and information such as test results in medical records Ensure proper consent forms are obtained prior to preparing a patient for treatment Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician following safety protocol of right dose, right patient, right route, right drug and noting expiration date Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, wound care instructions and physician’s instructions to patients Help physician examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials or performing such tasks as giving injections and removing sutures Under physician direction, authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies Prepare and clean exam rooms and medical equipment in between each patient and at the end of the day Assist physician with surgical procedure while maintaining sterile field Assess the patient’s condition throughout the exam, procedure or surgery according to the facility’s policies and notify physician and RN of any indication of distress Correctly disposes of infection waste and bio hazard materials Schedule appointments for patients Change dressings on wound Contact medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for tests and/or admission Inventory and assess the need for instruments, supplies and equipment while keeping the room stocked Performs accurate documentation of all procedures in a timely manner Assist physicians in patient, employee, or visitor medical emergencies and ensure proper documentation per facility’s policy Inventory and order medical emergency supplies monthly and ensure all equipment is in proper working order Adheres to all policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities while supporting a culture of high quality and great customer service Performs other duties as needed Required Qualification (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities) Education/Training High school diploma or equivalent Certified Medical Assistant CPR Additional Skills Knowledge of sterile technique, anatomy, and medications Detail oriented, professional attitude, reliable Management and organizational skills to support the leadership of this function Ability to follow or provide verbal & written instructions with sufficient grammar and spelling skills to avoid mistakes or misinterpretations Interpersonal skills to support customer service, functional, and teammate support needs Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing Mathematical and/or analytical ability for basic to intermediate problem solving Basic to intermediate computer operation Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook Specialty knowledge of systems relating to job function Knowledge of state and federal regulations for this position; general understanding of HIPAA guidelines Additional Knowledge/Skills 2+ years experience in a medical setting preferred Dermatology experience a plus High level of emotional and professional maturity and strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and trust, navigate and flex to varied personalities and communications styles Unquestionable work ethic, personal integrity, and honesty Ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic environment MUST HAVE FLEXIBILITY TO WORK ON SATURDAYS Benefits Berman Skin Institute believes our people are the secret to our success, and we work to create an environment where our people are appreciated, engaged, supported and rewarded.
