As a Level II Special Care Nursery designated facility, United Regional is able to provide care for infants with a 30-week or longer gestational age and a birth weight of greater than 1,250 grams who have physiologic immaturity, or who have problems that are expected to resolve rapidly and are not anticipated to require sub-specialty services on an urgent basis. In the Special Care Nursery, we collaborate with trained pediatricians, registered nurses, respiratory therapists, rehabilitation services and neonatal nutritionists to care for infants so that they can remain in our community without separation from their moms and dads while they receive the specialized care they need.

The Intensive Care Nursery (ICN) at BCH San Francisco was founded in 1964 and pioneered fetal surgery and is a 58-bed unit that provides care for critically ill newborns and infants. The Newborn ICU (NICU) at BCH Oakland is a 43-bed department. Both the ICN and the NICU have the expertise to treat the smallest, sickest and most fragile babies needing surgery for heart, lung, gastrointestinal and other life-threatening conditions. Our neonatal heart program is one of the largest in the country, treating almost 200 newborns with heart disease each year. Overview JOB SPECIFICS The Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) is a 64-bed, private-room unit with a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit, and a Small Baby Unit.
