The RN Coordinator of the ED/ICU is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has experience in nursing practice with demonstrated leadership and management skills in the acute care hospital Emergency/ICU specialty. The RN Coordinator of ED/ICU collaborates with the Nurse Manager to provide leadership for all staff on the unit and directs the planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care programs. The RN Coordinator of ED/ICU will report directly to the Nurse Manager of ED and ICU, collaborating with them on unit goals and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities:
A. MANAGEMENT OF PERSONNEL AND LEADERSHIP
a. Interview and select candidates who have appropriate clinical skills and professional characteristics to match patient needs.
b. Communicate on a consistent basis with employees regarding specific performance expectations. Plan and conduct formal performance reviews that are timely, ongoing, and objective.
c. Demonstrate and apply knowledge of employee expectations.
d. In collaboration with NM, promote/terminate employees based on standards of practice, standards of care, nursing and Oneida Health policies and procedures.
e. Interact with employees in a consistent, fair, timely, appropriate and decisive manner in accordance with Oneida Health and Nursing Department policies.
f. Direct and develop leadership and management skills by mentoring and role modeling.
g. Delegate activities/work projects to employees and supervise their accomplishment.
h. Supervise interdisciplinary employees, including nurses and ancillary staff
B. MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES
a. Direct adjustments in unit staffing pattern to reflect changes in care requirements, patient census, staffing resources, and clinical staffing plan.
b. Support a decentralized management philosophy (Shared Governance) at the unit level by designing and supporting a system that facilitates employee involvement at the unit, Nursing Department, and Oneida Health level.
c. Assure that unit space is utilized or altered to maximize safety and efficiency. Collaborate with other departments to ensure unit maintenance and environmental safety.
d. Collaborate with NM to develop and monitor systems to ensure cost-effectiveness by participating in the selection and use of materials and supplies, and monitoring charges.
e. Promote cost-effective behavior in staff through observation, education and accountability.
C. CLINICAL PRACTICE
a. Support a patient care system that encourages professional practice of staff and results in quality, cost-effective care outcomes.
b. Assure that patient and family care is provided within Oneida Health standards.
c. Demonstrate clinical knowledge by providing consultation to staff, assisting with patient care as needed, and acting as a resource to staff and consultant to other departments throughout the organization.
d. Analyze clinical practice and identify opportunities to increase effectiveness and efficiency.
e. Identify clinical indicators to measure and evaluate quality care. Collaborate with NM and Quality department to ensure that appropriate quality monitoring occurs on unit and that findings are used to improve practice and reduce potential for patient complications.
f. Collaborate with physicians and other health care professionals to address patient and family needs.
g. Collaborate with the Providers/Hospitalist team to ensure the safest and highest quality of care for the patients.
D. EDUCATION/OUTREACH
a. Identify and establish additional clinical learning opportunities for students in various health care disciplines in the unit (as appropriate). In conjunction with nursing faculty, monitor students’ performance.
b. Collaborate with the Clinical Educator to continually review educational opportunities for the clinical staff.
c. Support Oneida Health’s mission through consultation and/or participation in health promotion, health education, and specialty requests from community agencies.
E. RESEARCH
a. Evaluate current research in nursing for applicability within units/ programs of care.
b. Apply results of quality assurance studies to identify and design process improvement projects.
Education:
- Registered Nurse
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred)
Certifications:
- Unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in State of New York (required); Certification in specialty (preferred).
Experience:
- Three (3) to Five (5) years of relevant experience.
- Progressive nursing management experience with demonstrated success.
- Current regulatory, accreditation experience.
