  • Administer medications and other medical treatments required by students in accordance with physician orders and district and state policy; record into daily medication logs. Notify parents/caregivers when medications are running low and ensure paperwork is properly maintained in file for students receiving medications.
  • Contact parents/caregivers of ill or injured children, document all head injuries, file necessary accident reports in accordance with established health office procedures and prepare student to go home if necessary. Compile and submit student injury reports to District Nurse and appropriate administrative personnel. Serve as worker's compensation representative to assess and assist injured personnel with treatment options.
  • Perform clerical and secretarial duties as necessary, including answering phones, typing, copying, and preparing/mailing outgoing health correspondence.
  • Provide students and parents with options for treatment and/or community resources by serving as a liaison to outside agencies and programs.
  • Organize, schedule and implement health screening programs to include: vision, hearing, dental, etc. Record, track results, make recommendations for follow-up care for students who did not pass initial testing.
  • Notify building administrator, teachers, transportation and kitchen staff of students with significant health concerns. Attend staffing/child study meetings as needed. Research as needed regarding medications and conditions. Report suspected abuse or neglect to Administrator and proper authorities.
  • Assist in facilitating activities that promote healthy lifestyles for school and community (blood drives, immunization clinics, cholesterol screenings, dental clinics, etc.)
  • Assist in control of nuisance diseases per instruction of District Nurse and state health department. Report infectious diseases to District Nurse and state health department as per CDPHE guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly health office, including inventorying and ordering supplies. Assist with maintenance of the MSDS book for the building.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent. Training as one of the following desired: LPN, Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant.

Per protocol, collects, documents, tracks, stores and counts medications, medication forms, treatments, and medical procedures and enter into the Medication Log. Establish and maintain standards of emergency care to minimize the effects of accidents and illness in the school. Reviews, organizes, and tracks all Health History Forms, medical conditions, student clinic visits, follow-up with medical conditions, create Chronic Health Report, document students without insurance, and create a tickler file for students with emergency information. Provides essential delegated nursing tasks per protocol and within scope of LPN practice. Tasks include but aren't limited to: first aid, CPR, emergency care, acute and chronic student health needs, medications administration, specialized health procedures, care for students with special education needs, screenings, health related 504 and IEP interventions, and other tasks as directed. Observes the health needs of students during clinic visits, screenings, chart reviews, physician referrals and other modes of communication and reports the information to the registered nurse overseeing the school. Collaborates with assigned registered nurse in completing assignments, reporting data, and communicating pertinent school health concerns. Communicates pertinent student health information to required staff in an effective verbal and/or written format, per policy. Refers students to health, medical, social, educational, and other resources as required within parameters established by policy, this includes but is not limited to mandated reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect, immunizations, communicable disease, and others. Treatment provided within the scope of practice per the Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations. Reviews, tracks, and follows-up with student health documentation on required forms, per protocol and standards of nursing practice. Practices effective case management per nursing standards and policy. Serves as a member of the school safety committee. Maintains a well-equipped and organized clinic. Assembles a substitute folder, per protocol, to be sued in the absence of the school nurse. Coordinates, attends, and/or presents at various parent, student, and staff meetings included but not limited to "School-based Teams," 504 Meetings, IEP Meetings, Trainings, and others as required. Provides care for students with chronic and severe health, emotional, social, and educational conditions. Assists physician in health assessment of special education students, secures parental permission and provides follow-up. Trains and tracks staff on OSHA regulations, anaphylaxis, and other requirements as needed per protocol. Maintains appropriate OSHA standards and practices within school setting. Effectively manages clinic budget. Attends work daily, timely, and engaged and on tasks. Performs other related duties. Completion of state certified licensed practical nursing program. Current license to practice as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Knowledge of basic pharmacology. Knowledge of, and ability to use clinic/medical equipment. Ability to lift students as required. Knowledge and practice of "Standard precautions." Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Basic knowledge of standard computer software, internet, and email.
