Job Summary 

Under the direction of the Registered Nurse Preceptor, the Nurse Extern’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, utilization of the nursing process in the provision of care, communicating with all members of the health care team to assure patient goals are being met and coordinated, providing excellent customer service while supporting the patients and families physical and emotional heath. 

 

Essential Job Functions              

  • Under the direction of the RN preceptor, provides patient care through an interdisciplinary approach by assessing, planning, providing care and evaluating outcomes. Assures necessary communication with the healthcare team to assist the patient in meeting their goals.
  • Under the direction of the RN preceptor, performs nursing interventions and documents according to policy and procedure assuring patient safety. Ie: medication administration, medication reconciliation, fall prevention, VTE prevention, and all prescribed interventions as appropriate.
  • Assists the RN preceptor in the practice of professional nursing by providing direct patient care to promote patient comfort and facilitate the performance of diagnostic and treatment procedures as outlined in the nursing care plan. Performs assigned tasks that make include activities of daily living such as dietary and hygiene needs. Assists in ambulating, turning, and positioning patients as well as transporting patients, answering call lights, and reporting observations to the patient’s nurse.
  • Demonstrates professional behavior, strong customer service and communication skill, when interacting with all individuals and groups, both internally and externally.
  • Assists the RN with indirect care by maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and / or control infections and to provide for safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Registered Nurse Program approved by the State Board of Nursing
  • When enrolled in a BSN program: the student must be entering their senior year and have completed at least the medical/surgical clinical component of his/her educational experience.
  • When enrolled in a Diploma/Associate program: the student must be entering their final year of nursing school.
  • Must present proof of continued enrollment and passing grade(s) in nursing classes each semester until graduation and is in good academic standing.

License, Certification & Clearances 

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program required.

Description A nursing student, who has completed the first clinical year, inclusive of medical surgical nursing, within a baccalaureate nursing program and has a fundamental knowledge of the art and science of nursing, can function in this role. This experience assists the student nurse in expanding previously learned theory and skills through supervised patient care within a work setting. *ST41 is a short-term position. Responsibilities Performs and records patients vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respirations and pain rating. Documents clinical data as assigned, in a computer or manual system. Performs clinical procedures, such as specimen collection, venipuncture, EKG, application of sequential compression sleeves, post-mortem care, falls prevention, maintenance of skin integrity and capillary blood glucose monitoring. Sets up for selected procedures and assists RNs accordingly. Assists patient with activities of daily living, such as feeding, bathing and/or toileting. Orients patients to Specialty Service environment. Assists patient with ambulation and all levels of mobilization. Assists with dietary functions, including delivering and collecting patient trays at bedside, passing menus to patients and assisting them with menu completion, mixing nutritional supplements, reporting variation in eating patterns to RN/Dietitian, Maintaining accurate and timely systems for transmission of patient dietary orders and changes. Pediatric Nurse Extern - Emergency Department

About Us: Valley Children’s Pediatric Emergency Department (ED) is a licensed 38-bed unit and designated Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. Our Trauma designation allows us to receive critically injured patients directly from the scene and leverage our unique resources to support caring for injured pediatric patients. We have a specially trained, multidisciplinary team to support the care of 90,000 pediatric patients that cross our threshold annually. The ED is a fast-paced environment that requires teamwork, clear communication, and healthy collaboration to support safe, timely, efficient, equitable patient and family centered care. There is a variety of advancement and professional growth opportunities in the ED. These range from, but are not limited to, Mobile Intensive Care Nurses, a role in which supports our pre-hospital personnel with direction and coordination around receiving ambulance patients, to triage training, which prepares our nurses for the critical role of assessing and applying the appropriate urgency to arriving patients to assure our most critical patients are identified and expedited.
