Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Provides direct patient care within the scope of practice. The Registered Nurse also directs and guides patient/family teaching and activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing care in Telemetry. The Registered Nurse is directly responsible and accountable for the care given to his/her patients in the Emergency Department. He / She communicates with the physician about the changes in the patient’s clinical condition including results of the diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is capable of responding quickly and accurately to changes in the condition and/or response to treatment. Is knowledgeable about EMTALA regulations and reporting of child/adult abuse to appropriate agencies and Hospital Social Worker. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

1. Current and valid state RN License.2. Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current.3. Current ACLS certificate 30 days upon hire and maintain current. 4. Current PALS certificate and/or ENPC 30 days upon hire and maintain current. 5. Basic Arrythmia Interpretation within 30 days of hire. 6. Minimum of one year experience as a staff nurse RN in an acute care hospital setting; E.R. setting preferred.7. Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) preferred.8. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

 

Facility Specific Requirements (facility may require items listed below):

 

1. In Paramedic Base Station ED: MICN within 12 months of hire and maintain current. 2. EDAP certified facilities: Completion of emergency pediatric course 1 and 2 within 6 months of hire.3. Non-OB facilities: NRP certificate 90 days upon hire and maintain current.4. Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNNC) within 12 months of hire required.

With the Nurse Manager, ensures the nursing practice standards, health and safety requirements are met. 8. Disseminates information on new and revised policies and procedures. 9. Inspires and encourages teamwork. 10. Demonstrates decision-making skills be establishing priorities and initiating action. Coordinates and implements day-to-day work assignments. 11. Identifies learning needs of staff and with the Clinical Specialist, initiates action to facilitate meeting those needs. 12. Provides opportunities for skill development for staff. 13. With the nurse manager, participates in the interview and hiring processes for new employees as requested. 14. Coordinates orientation schedule and assignments for orientees assigned to the unit with the Clinical Specialist. Collaborates with the Clinical Specialist to ensure that staff attain defined competencies. 15. Actively participates in evaluation of staff performance for his/her assigned shift. 16. Provides immediate disciplining and counseling to staff as necessary in consultation with the Nurse Manager. 17. Actively participates in quality assurance activities. 18. Assists in the direct care of patients as needed. Serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. 19. Exercises cost-containment strategies and educates staff in such practices. 20. Provides input to the preparation of the annual budget. 21. Maintains open lines of communication with Nurses Manager, other departments, staff, physicians, resident staff, and other support personnel. 22. Identifies and participates in educational programs to strengthen both clinical and management expertise. Standard Management Level Responsibilities: 1. Directs and supervises assigned personnel including performance evaluations, scheduling, orientation, and training. Makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions. Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities. 2. Develops and recommends the budgets for the areas managed. Manages activities to assure financial goals are met. 3. Coordinates the assignment of tasks and helps resolve technical and operational problems. Evaluates the impact of solutions to ensure goals are achieved. 4. Provides effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation, and fosters the effective integration of efforts with system-wide initiatives. 5. Encourages and supports diverse views and approaches, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors. 6. Integrates diversity into departmental objectives, such as hiring, promotions, training, vendor selections, etc. 7. Participates in performance improvement initiatives and demonstrates the use of quality improvement in daily operations. 8. Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies such as Joint Commission, DPH, etc. Develops and maintains procedures necessary to meet regulatory requirements. 9. Ensures that department complies with hospital established policies, quality assurance programs, safety, and infection control policies and procedures. 10. Ensures adequate equipment and supplies for department. 11. Develops and maintains established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. 12. Ensures compliance to all health and safety regulations and requirements. 13. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance. 14. Performs similar or related duties as required or directed. All responsibilities are essential job functions. II. Position Qualifications: License/Certification/Education: Required: 1. Bachelor’s degree in nursing or management experience and current Massachusetts Registered Nurse licensure and registration. Experience/Skill: Required: 1. Minimum of two years related clinical experience and at least one year experience in the clinical preceptor and/or resource role. 2. Demonstrates leadership experience. 3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements. Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents. III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions: Work is considered moderate, frequent walking, standing and potential exposure to hazardous materials including blood and bodily fluids. Position requires work indoors in a patient care environment.
