  • Knows and follows aseptic techniques when performing scrub duties and support duties for the department
  • Performs scrub duties as assigned in service areas
  • Assists in carrying out the patient's plan of care by performing assigned tasks within scope of practice of the surgical technologists and according to the unit guidelines of care, facility policies and procedures, nursing policies and procedures, and legal limitations
  • Access to medication/supply room to retrieve patient care items for patient care use
  • Transports and/or escorts patients to various areas
  • Assists with the maintenance, selection and preparation of instruments, equipment and supplies necessary to maintain a state of readiness for operative cases
  • Fosters guest relations within the team and with patients and families
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information
  • Supports patients in the practice of their cultural and spiritual beliefs within limits of the plan of care
  • Adjusts patient care based on the age-specific physiological and psychosocial needs of patients
  • Participates in educational and performance improvement activities
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:


Education and Formal Training: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent required 
  • Completion of Surgical Technologist Course from an Accredited CAHEA Program preferred

Work Experience: 

  • 1 year experience as a surgical technologist preferred 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: 

  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking the English language
  • Works with complex monitoring and life-saving equipment
  • Knowledge of Standard Precautions
  • Position involves skin, eye, mucous membrane, or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material
  • Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific physiological/psychosocial/ developmental/ spiritual needs of patients typically served
  • Demonstrates self-directed learning and achievement of assigned clinical area objectives

Physical Requirements: 

  • Speech and auditory acuity for communication of patient needs 
  • Visual acuity for observation of patients 
  • Long periods of standing, walking, bending and lifting 
  • May involve skin, eye, mucous membrane or parenteral contact with blood or other potentially infectious material

Participates in the final “Time Out” process in the OR or procedure room to verify the correct patient, the correct procedure, the correct site and if applicable, the correct side. Cleans and/or disinfects instruments and equipment after use and returns it to the proper area for storage or processing. Participates in sponge, instrument, and needle count with the circulation nurse.
