Job Summary

The Rheumatology service is a team of physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) that provide care to an array of medically complex patient populations at every acuity level from general care to intensive care, with the largest patient population at the moderate care level. The Rheumatology service cares for a vast array of conditions, including gout, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, antiphospholipid syndrome, scleroderma, vasculitis, Sjogren's syndrome, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and myositis. With over 40 faculty members and clinical practitioners providing inpatient and outpatient care, our Division is one of the largest locally and in the country. At present, the Rheumatology service practices out of five ACUs located at the Taubman Center, Briarwood Medical Associates, Brighton Center for Specialty Care, Northville, and the Ypsilanti Health Center. We are actively seeking compassionate, enthusiastic, and patient oriented individuals who will share in the goal of creating the ideal experience for our patients, families and employees. This position will support the Scleroderma and general autoimmunity patient populations at Taubman Medical Center and Briarwood Medical Associates.

Responsibilities*

Duties Will Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Perform detailed history and physical, formulate initial assessment and plan
  • Ability to perform arthrocentesis and conduct synovial fluid analysis
  • Appropriately order, collect, and interpret reports from diagnostic lab testing, radiographic procedures, and other clinical studies as medically necessary
  • Prescribe medications and enter other orders related to patient care
  • Provide expert and complex clinical care to adult patients in the Internal Medicine Rheumatology Outpatient Clinic as a team member collaborating with physicians, medical assistants, LPNs and RNs as well as other Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners
  • Exercise autonomy in medical decision-making and provide diagnostic and therapeutic services to new and established rheumatology patients
  • Manage patients with complex, acute, and chronic rheumatic diseases
  • Perform consults on new patient, and return visits
  • Assess, diagnose, and treat health problems for patients with rheumatic diseases
  • Accurately bill for completed services
  • Perform health assessments, including patient history, physical examinations, diagnostic tests and appropriate interventions or referrals.
  • Document patient care and progress and maintain complete and detailed patient records
  • Provide patient education. Manage immunosuppression and opportunistic infections in rheumatic patients
  • Assist attending physicians in orientation of new medical trainees to the service, such as resident physicians or medical students; assist in the training of new Advanced Practice Providers to the service
  • Communicate appropriately with attending physicians, consultants, and other members of the patient care team in order to coordinate and provide clinical care
  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatments
  • Participate in quality assurance activities including quality improvement projects, peer evaluations and support research initiatives including screening patients for clinical trial eligibility
  • Assist in the development of patient-specific, facility-based disease management protocols; perform other related duties as required to assure patient safety and satisfaction; and utilize new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignments


Required Qualifications*

Np

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
  • Current certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner FNP, Adult Nurse Practitioner ANP, or Adult Gerontology Nurse Practitioner AGACNP.
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA Approved BLS
  • ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center)
  • Two years of APP experience managing patients with Rheumatologic and autoimmune conditions


Pa

  • Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan
  • Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
  • State of Michigan Controlled Substance License Required
  • Current DEA registration required
  • AHA Approved BLS
  • ACLS required (separate AHA approved BLS also required unless ACLS was completed through the UMHS Simulation Center)
  • Two years of APP experience managing patients with Rheumatologic and autoimmune conditions

SUMMARY: The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for primary care to an assigned panel of participants at PACE SEMI.
