How you make a difference The Nurse Practitioner (NP) under the supervision of the Site Medical Director and other site Physicians, offers a comprehensive range of medical services to incarcerated patients in accordance with established policy and state guidelines. They ensure necessary documentation of services is provided to the Site Medical Director or designee to monitor the provision of clinical services. Additionally, they communicate scheduling changes to the Medical Director and H.S.A. and make arrangements for coverage of medical services if unavailable for an extended period of time. Key Responsibilities Provides medical care to inmates, including conducting exams, chronic care clinics, and infirmary rounds. Maintains accurate and legible progress note documentation in SOAP format and adheres to formulary guidelines. Responds to emergencies and makes logical decisions regarding non-formulary drugs or off-site referrals. Supports existing policies and procedures for admission, transfer, and specialty consultant referrals. Maintains confidentiality and provides input into facility committees as requested. Qualifications & Requirements Education A graduate of an accredited school of nursing An advanced degree in an approved and accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Experience Prior medical/surgical and/or emergency/trauma experience and corrections experience is preferred. Must have the patience and tact to deal with the inmate patient population and ability to work effectively in the corrections environment. Scheduling flexibility is also required to be able to rotate hours and shifts, if needed, and to be called during emergency situations to provide coverage. Licenses/Certifications Must have and maintain current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner within the state of employment. Must have and maintain current CPR certification. Accurately performs and records vital signs, weight and height, point of service blood glucose testing, and promptly reports abnormalities to the medical provider or Registered Nurse (RN) on duty. Utilizes appropriate techniques when collecting routine urine specimens and specimens for C/S. Appropriately instructs patients on clean catch specimens. Utilizes appropriate technique in performing venipuncture to obtain blood specimens in accordance with agency procedure. Verbalizes knowledge of and adherence to OSHA standards for blood borne pathogens when handling blood and body fluids. Maintains standard precautions in the provision of patient care. Maintains and monitors stock inventory in the treatment center and replenishes supplies in exam rooms on a timely basis. Prepares and processes requisitions for routine supplies in accordance with agency procedures. Monitors the integrity of equipment and promptly reports malfunction, missing or damaged equipment to the Registered Nurse (RN) or Office Manager. Demonstrates competency in answering phones, patient registration, making appointments, computer data entry and retrieval of reports. Copies, prepares records, and stores and maintains appropriate records. Keeps records of all laboratory work sent, files laboratory reports on client record, and prepares and processes Lab/Diagnostic requisitions. Develop and oversee a cleaning and stocking assignment and schedule for support staff. Ensure an adequate level of medical supplies. Maintain the medication room, by checking for expired items and correct par level of medications. Maintain refrigerator temp log and daily O2 check. Ensure that lab logs are maintained. Oversight of clinical staff in conjunction with Ambulatory Office Manager: Assess and evaluate staff performance and complete annual assessment, performance programs and competencies Assign staff to work with providers and address staffing shortfalls in conjunction with other leads Address provider concerns with regard to clinical staff and provide counseling/disciplinary action as required Monitor staff time and approve time off requests ensuring adequate staffing; review biweekly time and attendance forms for accuracy. Maintain efficiency of clinical operations: Make recommendations to physician and operations lead to improve efficiency and physician productivity within the practice. Attend regular leadership meetings and participate in decision making related to the clinical practice as a whole. Work closely with other clinical leads and Ambulatory Office Manager to ensure consistency in processes and procedures across practice locations. Provide Clinical support: Perform injections as ordered. Work with providers when assigned. Provide patient and family teaching as needed. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Valid New York State License as LPN. Four (4) years of full time medically related experience in patient care required with a demonstrated working knowledge of many procedures under a variety of work conditions, including strict deadlines or emergencies.
