The latest expansion will total 30 surgery suites. Specialties include orthopedics, cardio-vascular, robotics, gyn and urology services. Parkwest surgery is a fast paced, exciting environment. Parkwest surgery and leadership also offers students the ability to receive clinical hours for surgical scrub techs, nurses, physicians assistants and medical students. Position Summary: This position is only available for Certified Surgical Technologists at Parkwest Medical Center and Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. Facilitates patient care by assisting physicians and nursing staff before, during and after surgical procedures by creating and maintaining a sterile field and providing the instruments and supplies required by the surgeons in a sterile manner according to the established plan of patient care. Competently performs with and/or without assistance the majority of assigned cases in a given service/shift; may perform difficult or complicated cases either with or without assistance. Responsibilities Under supervision of RN/MD, facilitates patient care by assisting the surgeon before, during and after surgical procedures by creating and maintaining a sterile field and providing the instruments and supplies required by the surgeons in a sterile manner according to the established plan for patient care; follows unit standards and processes to deliver age-appropriate care for all patients; demonstrates accountability as an individual and team member in meeting patient/family needs; participates in identifying cost-effective measures for clinical care. Plans, sets up, performs and cleans up the assigned surgical procedure as a circulator and/or as a scrub tech; demonstrates knowledge of equipment and instrumentation pertaining to case; safely operates special equipment which may be used in surgical cases (e.g. lasers, microscopes, tourniquets, endoscopes, drills, saws, etc.); maintains instrument and equipment integrity; performs room turn-over and terminal cleaning; utilizes supplies appropriately and in a cost effective manner. Demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles of asepsis in creating and maintaining the sterile field; uses proper technique when scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and setting up of sterile fields; recognizes what is sterile and what is unsterile; recognizes contamination and takes proper action to correct situation; continually monitors the sterile field and surgical team to assure that sterility is maintained. Assists nurse in performing sharp, sponge and instrument counts according to policy as needed; demonstrates proper counting technique for all countables and applies proper procedures with incorrect counts; demonstrates understanding of exceptions to counts. Demonstrates proper positioning techniques; knows the proper position for cases and understands the use of proper positioning aids to protect nerves, bony prominences and to maintain circulation. Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested. Performs other duties as assigned. Our patient mix is made of approximately 30 to 50 percent of our inpatient cases and Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy as deemed appropriate by our physicians. The remaining census consists of Medical/Surgical patients We also provide supportive/palliative care, which can involve transitioning to Hospice/End of Life Care. We also provide support to families and loved ones during this very difficult time. We are able to accommodate 32 patients with 16 telemetry monitors on our floor. Job Objectives : Assume direct responsibility and accountability for, and authority of, the nursing care of all patients assigned. Responsibilities Assesses and identifies the patient's physiological and psycho-social problems and needs. Develops an individualized plan of nursing care for each patient in which goals, in terms of measurable outcomes, are stated. Ensures that nursing care plan is consistent with the medical plan and adheres to accepted current standards of care and practice. Makes appropriate assignments to team members by utilizing patient acuity data, and maintains accountability for members under his/her direction. Ensures nursing care adheres to current hospital/departmental policies, procedures, and regulations. Demonstrates principles of infection control and collaborates with infection control nurse to ensure safety of patients, staff, and visitors. Participates in the orientation of new personnel. Assists clinical instructors in providing learning experiences for nursing students. Documents review and/or revision of each assigned patient's plan of care at least every 24 hours. NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties as assigned. HEALTH/SAFETY/COMPETENCE: Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to customer or patient population assigned. Qualifications Education/Knowledge/Skills : Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Must have knowledge of: Etiology, pathophysiology and prognosis for illnesses and health problems; The nursing process; The management process; Current developments in nursing; Hospital functions, policies, procedures and regulations as they relate to nursing service. For staff involved in the care of age-specific groups, knowledge of the bio-psychosocial needs of adult, geriatric and pediatric patients is essential. Special knowledge is required in growth and development needs of pediatric/geriatric patients where applicable. Experience : Previous experience in department specialty preferred. Licensure/Certifications: Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Tennessee Board of Nursing, or have a temporary permit to practice. Must be currently certified (or scheduled for certification or recertification training according to department guidelines) in the life support program(s) specific to unit(s) worked (CPR, ACLS, NALS) .
