Overview The Department of Medicine at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University is seeking an outstanding Medical Assistant to join the team. Position assists physicians, APPs, and nursing staff with patient care to include patient triage, referral orders, retrieve imaging and lab results, process work tasks, messages in the EHR and patient portal, assists other clinical staff with daily clinical and administrative tasks, and stock/prepare exam rooms. Also prepares patients for provider visits and assisting providers with procedures. Responsibilities Triage incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, following standing triage orders, reconcile medication list, reconcile allergies, make sure immunizations are up to date and prepare patient for the visit. Assist physicians with examinations, minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures and treatments. Provide basic patient care and education as directed by provider and standing orders. Completes delegated tasks from the current and prior day i.e.: patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health agency requests, medication prior authorizations, patient forms, and physician follow-up. All tasks must be reviewed, addressed, and marked appropriately before the close of each business day. Coordinates services with specialists i.e.: radiation oncology, pulmonology, endocrinology, nutritional counseling, or social services consultation. Documents all correspondence and interventions in the electronic health record. Assists supervisors in the training of new staff members. Maintains current inventory of medical and office supplies Cleans, sterilizes, and maintains used instrumentation per department protocol. Medical Assistants are required to fill in for other clinical staff during vacations and illness and perform other duties as assigned by providers, or supervisors at both sites. The successful candidate in this role shall respond to questions from patients, family members, faculty/residents, other health care providers in a timely and professional manner. Patient inquiries should be answered on the same day they are received, before leaving for the day. If patient is not home at the first attempt, a notation should be made in the medical record. All patient conversations must be documented in the electronic medical record. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications and Skills: Certification as a Medical Assistant such an RMA or CMA is required. Completion of BLS training and recertification every 2 years Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program. Preferred Qualifications: The candidate shall be detail oriented, self-motivated, and possess excellent time management and interpersonal skills. Overview Under the daily supervision of the Department Administrator, and Clinical Supervision of a Psychiatrist, this role functions as an Advanced Practice Provider within EVMS Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. This role will enable the Department Psychiatrists to expand their capacity to perform comprehensive new patient evaluations, and to provide patient care for patients that have established and determined diagnosis. This Advanced Practice Provider will also play a pivotal role in the Department's Next Day Clinic (NDAC). Responsibilities Evaluates New Patients. Develop treatment plans for established patients and our revisions in accordance with applicable protocols, standards of care and under the clinical supervision of assigned psychiatrists. Prescribes medications under the practice agreement. Elicits and records a comprehensive and accurate past medical and social history and review of Systems for patients within EPIC. Maintains effective communication with Chairman, Department Administrator, and providers regarding individuals. patient care and develop a coordinated care plan. Maintains strict confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA and manages matters professionally with sensitivity to racial, ethnic, and sexual orientation issues. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications and Skills: Master’s in physician assistant or Nurse Practitioner. Must be a licensed PA by the Virginia Board of Medicine and a certified physician assistant by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for overseeing and assisting with the day-to-day patient care including but not limited to taking vitals, administering meds/treatments, assisting physicians, doing wound care, patient education, documentation, coordinating care, focusing on comfort and supporting quality initiatives, in a fast-paced office. LPN will also assist with training new staff and a point of contact for medical assistants. Overview This is a full-time position for a Medical Assistant within the Medical Group Float Pool providing outpatient care to patients and supporting physicians across all clinical areas of the Medical Group. The role is responsible for assisting providers and nurses with patient examinations, ensuring efficient operations and high-quality, patient-centered care. Responsibilities Clinical Patient Care and Procedural Support – 50% Assist physicians, providers, and nurses in the daily care of patients across general department services. Assist with common procedures and testing under the direct supervision of a physician or nurse practitioner/physician assistant. Obtain and record vital signs, including height, weight, temperature, and blood pressure. Draw blood and administer injections under the supervision of a Physician or Registered Nurse. Collect and prepare laboratory specimens. Patient Intake & Documentation – 25% Ensure all necessary data—such as labs, medical records, and imaging—are available before appointments. Create and update patient forms and documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR). Obtain labs, clinic notes, inpatient records, and specialty reports from referring providers.
