Under the direction of the department manager leads safety and quality initiatives, focuses on and simplifies workflow, and contributes to the development of staff. What we are: 9 Kaufman is a 24-bed stepdown intermediate care unit that specializes in vascular surgery, telemetry and renal/pancreas transplant patients. 9 Kaufman is part of the Surgical Specialty Team at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH). Staffing is comprised of RNs, LPNs, NCPs (nursing care partners) and UAs (unit ambassadors) and CSAs (clinical support associates). What we do: Some of 9 Kaufman's vascular surgeries include aortic aneurysm repair, carotid endarterectomy, femoral bypass surgeries and amputations. 9 Kaufman is an extension of the renal/pancreas transplant team to include the outpatient transplant center and all the nurses on 9 Kaufman are specially trained and can sit for the PCCN certification which we will help you obtain. All the beds on 9 Kaufman are monitored beds. 9 Kaufman cares for a variety of patients with telemetry needs, providing an environment conducive to extensive learning and skill development. Overview Advanced Practice Providers (APP), a nurse practitioner (NP) or a physician assistant (PA), who will function as a clinical provider in the Division of Geriatrics/Palliative Care/NeuroHealth, Department of Medicine. The APP will participate in all aspects of patient care and will participate in the supporting roles of consultant and educator as indicated. The clinical practice will focus on provision of care to all types of patients. Nursing and medicine must maintain ongoing collaboration in education and practice so that the practitioner is maximally effective in meeting the primary health-care needs of all patients. When performing nursing aspects of this role, the practitioner must have the opportunity to engage in independent as well as co-operative decision making. When performing expanded aspects of the role that overlap, the practitioner must function in collaboration with qualified physicians within the framework of jointly approved guidelines. Practitioners not only must be prepared and competent to apply additional knowledge and skills, but also must be ready and willing to accept responsibility and accountability for their practice. Care is provided at all levels of the health-care system, but predominately in an ambulatory setting. Responsibilities Independently assess, diagnose, & develop treatment plans for patients in the area of Geriatrics/Palliative Care/NeuroHealth in accordance with protocols and standards of care. Promote a schedule of health promotion examinations and interventions in our patient population Obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications under a collaborative practice agreement. Differentiate between normal and abnormal findings and orders appropriate diagnostic studies. Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families. Document patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate outgoing correspondence. Be familiar with documentation requirements to insure proper billing. Initiate and coordinate referrals to other health care team members or agencies. Serve as a consultative resource to nursing clinic staff. Participate in the development, utilization and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs. Provide education to external agencies, community and other health professionals. Participate in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes. Monitor task module of the electronic health record to insure timely response. Responsible for administrative activities and special projects as assigned. Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals. Participate and contribute to activities that enhance clinical expertise and nursing knowledge. Participate in professional medical activities in the division, community and professional organizations. Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, fellows, residents and the public. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Nurse Practitioners must have an MSN with a nurse practitioner focus. Must be a licensed RN by the Virginia Board of Nursing and a certified nurse practitioner. Overview Function as an independent nurse clinician in the Minimally Invasive Gynecological Surgery division to include the performance, interpretation, and reporting of test results, assessment of patient status, educational needs, and follow up care. Provides education for staff and community and assists with research programs. Responsibilities Answers the Triage line, records calls, and functions independently to apply standard orders appropriately. Returns Patient and Physician phone calls in a timely manner.
