The MedSurg Inpatient Unit is great for a nurse who desires variety, challenges, opportunities, and support from an enthusiastic and cohesive pediatric team. This is a dynamic group of people who love working with children and their families in the southern part of Colorado. We build relationships with families for a lifetime. The MedSurg unit is a mix of many patient populations and a great opportunity for you to use all your skills you learned in nursing school. We care for children with a variety of medical conditions including gastrointestinal, neurologic, metabolic, renal, hematological, oncological, infectious disease, behavioral, pulmonary, and immune deficiencies. We care for simple medical patients such as asthma and bronchiolitis, to complex medical patients, such as diabetic ketoacidosis. We also care for simple postoperative care to complex postoperative care such as spinal fusions. We provide hematological and oncological care to children in Southern Colorado, providing social/emotional development, as well as high-quality nursing care to this special patient population. CO Springs Hospital is a Pediatric Level 2 Trauma Center, so we also care for a variety of traumatic injuries. SUMMARY: Provide a full range of nurse practitioner services in accordance with privileges granted by the Commanding Officer (e.g., supervise and provide general screening and medical care and examinations of patients for routine, acute and chronic conditions involving any and all organ systems; provide immunizations; diagnose, treat, and counsel patients as indicated. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Treat patients with common acute conditions, illnesses, or minor trauma within accepted protocols, Nurse Practice Acts, and/or in collaboration with a physician. Collaborate with the physician in the health care of patients with chronic illnesses. Request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated. Order diagnostic tests as applicable. Prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Promote preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling. Coordinates patient care through a continuum and facilitates the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to care, quality and cost effectiveness. Ensures compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines used in the medical treatment facility. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries. Assesses patients. Completes orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with (IAW) unit guidelines. Participates in the orientation of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate. Serves and participates in committees, functions and other meetings as directed. Provides relevant and timely information to these groups and assists with decision-making and process improvement. Participates in customer service initiatives, and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services. Must possess and maintain an active, current, valid and unrestricted RN license as well being licensed to the Advanced Practice level IAW the US jurisdiction (fifty States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands) requirements of their currently held RN license to practice independently within the defined scope of practice for their specialty. Experience/Clinical Competency: Must have a minimum of 24 months in the last 36 months of documented current clinical independent experience and competency in an outpatient family medicine setting. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily indoors at a well-lit military treatment facility such as a clinic, outpatient facility or hospital. The environment is normally air conditioned, but conditions may change dependent upon circumstances. Work may need to be performed in a fast-paced environment requiring quick thinking and rapid judgements. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of clients in differing functions, personalities and abilities. We specialize in heart, vascular, general, gynecology, urology, ortho, spine, neuro, plastics, robotics, and trauma procedures on adult patients only.
