JOB SUMMARY The Advanced Cardiac & Vascular APRN provides direct patient care services for complex critically ill adult patients in the ICU-CV setting in collaboration with and under the supervision of the indicated surgeon, EP, CV Anesthesiologist or Cardiologist. The APN performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care and discharge of patients, and provides direct patient care services. The APRN contributes to excellence in patient care. The APRN collaborates with the Intensivist and the Intensivist Program members to ensure coordination of care. The CV APRN will collaborate with the medical intensivist, and other medical sub-specialties when indicated to ensure the CV patients clinical needs are met. The CV APRN has advanced training to act as the provider for the Advanced Heart Surgery patients in the absence of the heart surgeon or the CV Anesthesiologist. The CV APRN must be knowledgeable regarding the current ACC/SCAI guidelines for Cardiogenic Shock Care as well as the STS Guidelines for open heart and valve surgery. The CV APRN will participate in the unscheduled, urgent ECMO, Advanced Heart Surgery, and LVAD meetings regardless of their work assignment. The CV APRN will be expected to properly perform quality respiratory intubation, extubation, insertion and removal of central lines, arterial lines, venous and arterial sheaths. The CV APRN is to act as a role model for RN staff, ensuring that the rationale for care is provided such that the RN develops a knowledge base specific to Advanced Heart Surgery Patients.
