Description JOB DESCRIPTION: Performs assigned patient care and observation duties under the direction of a licensed provider, RN, or LPN. Responsible for performing routine and more complex medical assistant clinical duties to include, but not limited to, taking vital signs, administering a limited profile of medications per The Emory Clinic approved policy, performing simple diagnostic tests, collecting specimens, drawing blood, sterilizing and cleaning equipment, and maintaining examination rooms in an outpatient care setting. As part of a patient focused service, promotes a supportive and healing environment to enhance customer and staff satisfaction. Assists in emergency situations as directed by an licensed provider, RN, or LPN. May also be responsible for some administrative duties in support of patient and practice operations including patient check in/out, responding to patient requests, reinforcing patient and family education, and visitor/telephone reception. Maintains patients' charts and records data, ensuring proper identification, documentation, routing, and confidentiality. Maintains a clean and healthy environment in compliance with Universal Precaution guidelines and safety standards. Orders, verifies, and stores unit supplies. All duties and patient interaction performed in accordance with Emory Healthcare patient and family centered care standards. May participate in research projects impacting patient care areas. Performs other related responsibilities as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or GED required. Basic computer skills required. One year work experience preferred. Current AHA BLS certification is required for hire and must be maintained throughout employment. Current certification as one of the following is required: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Preferred certification is the CMA or RMA. Must successfully complete all medical assistant orientation and training requirements and annual skills competency. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. Patient Registration & Financial Responsibilities • Greets patients courteously, determines their needs, and offers assistance. • Registers patients by performing necessary procedures, such as preparation of records, reports, notices, service charge slips, and payor information. • Interviews patients, relatives, or others responsible to determine payment arrangements and refers unusual cases to the immediate supervisor. • May assist self-pay patients in making suitable arrangements for balances due beyond initial deposits or third-party payments. • Answers inquiries related to patient accounts and advises patients on insurance benefits. • Receives all payments and deposits, issues receipts for all monies received, and properly accounts for all funds received. • Posts charges daily to proper patient accounts. • Posts payments to accounts daily. • Determines billing method for third-party payors. • Contacts insurance carriers/agencies to obtain precertification of ancillary, admission, and surgical procedures. Administrative Responsibilities • Operates various office equipment including copiers, fax machines, and other assigned equipment. • Operates communication systems, placing and answering telephone calls, paging, or contacting staff. • May make and maintain appointment schedules for clinic physicians. • May secure required signatures on reports and records relative to release of information according to policies and procedures. • Contacts patients, physicians, or others for information necessary to properly complete insurance or other billings. • Types memos, correspondence, and other documents as needed. • Compiles periodic and statistical reports and other data as directed. Verbalizes knowledge of and adherence to OSHA standards for blood borne pathogens when handling blood and body fluids. Maintains standard precautions in the provision of patient care. Maintains and monitors stock inventory in the treatment center and replenishes supplies in exam rooms on a timely basis. Prepares and processes requisitions for routine supplies in accordance with agency procedures. Monitors the integrity of equipment and promptly reports malfunction, missing or damaged equipment to the Registered Nurse (RN) or Office Manager. Demonstrates competency in answering phones, patient registration, making appointments, computer data entry and retrieval of reports. Copies, prepares records, and stores and maintains appropriate records. Keeps records of all laboratory work sent, files laboratory reports on client record, and prepares and processes Lab/Diagnostic requisitions. Conforms to policies and regulations governing patient rights and confidentiality of information. Adheres to protocol for patient flow (1. Reception, 2. Registration, 3. Labs, 4. Escort to Provider). Perform all other related duties as assigned by management. Qualifications Required Education & Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited school of Practical Nursing. Currently registered in New York State as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Must have excellent communications skills Demonstrated competency in performing venipuncture for collection of blood specimens. Preferred Qualifications: Three years’ experience in ambulatory care setting required as a LPN Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
