Responsibilities Assist with patient care under the direction of physicians. Prepare patients for office visits and procedures. Preforms a variety of patient care activities, such as vaccine/medication administration, phlebotomy, and point of care testing. Provides indirect patient care via phone or EHR by addressing patient questions, processing medication refills and scheduling follow-up appointments. Utilize electronic health record for efficient care. Qualifications One year experience as a clinic back office medical assistant preferred. Education: Completion of a medical assistant program or equivalent experience; or Completion of a formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces; or Completion of Basic or Advanced Oregon Emergency Medical Technician program (Oregon only) Licensure MA certification required within one year, from either the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), the American Medical Technologists (AMT), the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), or the National Healthcare Association (NHA). Overview The Medical Assistant is responsible for efficient and courteous registration, transfer and discharge of patients within established policies and procedures; thoroughly compiles and types of medical information for patients' records and statistical reports and maintains current and accurate patient account receivables. The Medical Assistant is responsible for performing a wide variety of patient care activities and accommodative services for the comfort and well-being of patients in accordance with physicians' orders. Special Instructions Float Clinic Medical Assistant Non-Union Position Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities • Performs basic patient care procedures as required. • Participates in conferences and serves on committees as requested. • Participates in patient and family education as necessary. • Prepares for and assists with diagnostic and therapeutic treatments. • Takes and records vital signs, height and weight. • Performs catheterizations and provides catheter care. • Administers oral and intra-muscular medications. • Cares for patients receiving oxygen therapy. • Applies sterile and non-sterile compresses and bandages. • Tests urine for sugar, acetone, and pH. • Assists with physical examinations. • Applies ace bandages, hot and/or cold compresses. • Collects specimens, blood, urine, stool, and sputum. • May perform venipunctures and EKGs as needed. • Maintains cleanliness, safety and efficiency in the clinic. • Remains alert and able to respond appropriately in emergency situations. • Prepares used equipment for re-sterilization. • Knows legal requirements for reporting to police, health department, and other agencies and follows requirements. • Accompanies or transfers patients to other departments such as laboratory or x-ray. • Cleans and stocks examination rooms. • Manages time to expedite patient flow. • Assists with minor outpatient surgery. Patient Registration & Financial Responsibilities • Greets patients courteously, determines their needs, and offers assistance. • Registers patients by performing necessary procedures, such as preparation of records, reports, notices, service charge slips, and payor information. • Interviews patients, relatives, or others responsible to determine payment arrangements and refers unusual cases to the immediate supervisor. • May assist self-pay patients in making suitable arrangements for balances due beyond initial deposits or third-party payments. • Answers inquiries related to patient accounts and advises patients on insurance benefits. • Receives all payments and deposits, issues receipts for all monies received, and properly accounts for all funds received. • Posts charges daily to proper patient accounts. • Posts payments to accounts daily. • Determines billing method for third-party payors. • Contacts insurance carriers/agencies to obtain precertification of ancillary, admission, and surgical procedures. Administrative Responsibilities • Operates various office equipment including copiers, fax machines, and other assigned equipment. • Operates communication systems, placing and answering telephone calls, paging, or contacting staff. • May make and maintain appointment schedules for clinic physicians. • May secure required signatures on reports and records relative to release of information according to policies and procedures. • Contacts patients, physicians, or others for information necessary to properly complete insurance or other billings. • Types memos, correspondence, and other documents as needed. • Compiles periodic and statistical reports and other data as directed. Qualifications Education • High School Diploma Required • Graduate of Medical Assistant Training Program Preferred Experience • Up to 1 year • Three (3) to six (6) months on-the-job training as required to attain proficiency of assigned duties and responsibilities if not certified. Required Required Skills, Knowledge & Abilities • Obtain patient history and take vital signs to assist physician with examination and treatment. • Prepare and maintain examination and treatment area. • Perform selected tests that assist with diagnosis and treatment. • Screen and follow-up patient test results. • Prepare and administer medications as directed by physician and maintain medication records. Plans and implements and a physician reviews and confirms health care goals for patients. Responsible for the patient throughout the course of the treatment, provides the physical examination, the diagnosis, and the health care plan, determines when the patient has recovered, and releases the patient. Refers patients to physicians for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment but retains responsibility for clinical management as well as any subsequent modification. Qualifications Education: As required by licensure. Experience: Clinical experience requirements are dependent upon the specific position, and include a minimum of 2 years of experience in a related field. Qualifications Education • High School Diploma Required • Graduate of Medical Assistant Training Program Preferred Experience • Up to 1 year • Three (3) to six (6) months on-the-job training as required to attain proficiency of assigned duties and responsibilities if not certified. Overview The Clinic Nurse I is accountable for interpreting the plan of Medical care, assessment of patients, devising the patient care plan, providing individualized nursing care, and evaluating nursing care for groups of patients under the direction of the nurse in charge. Reviews ancillary service reports, communicates abnormal results to physicians, and notifies supervisor and physician when ancillary services are not completed. Interprets plan of medical care, evaluates patients, and devises patient care plan. Maintains proper control of medicine, equipment, and supplies specific to the assigned unit and assures adequate inventory of supplies as necessary for care of ambulatory clinic patients. Plans for continuity of patient care considering all available resources and documents actions taken. Refers patients to social worker, and agencies as required. Provides a safe and secure environment for the patient. Implements the patient care plan by formulating objectives for ambulatory care, assigning tasks to clinic personnel, and continuously assessing and evaluating patient care and patient responses. Performs treatments and procedures and patient care which may require expert skill and judgment in accordance with established standards. May attend physicians during exams, communicates pertinent information about patient to the physician, and assists the physician with treatments and procedures.
