Nurses care for high-acuity patients requiring mechanical ventilation, multiple titratable infusions, vasopressors, vasodilators and advanced hemodynamic monitoring. Specialized therapies and equipment include Impella devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps and bedside dialysis. Common diagnoses include respiratory failure, severe COPD or pneumonia, sepsis, septic or hypovolemic shock and advanced heart failure. Nurse-to-patient ratios are typically 1:1 or 1:2, depending on patient acuity.
