Intensive Care Unit The ICU at the downtown campus specializes in the care of the moderate to complex medical, surgical and cardiovascular diagnosis using a multidisciplinary collaborative team approach. The majority of our diagnosis include but not limited to respiratory failure, sepsis, DKA, CVA, CHF, AMI with PCI, AKI, ETOH withdrawal, overdose, recovery from general or orthopedic surgery. Intensive therapeutic modalities that include inotropic/vasoactive medications, mechanical ventilation, CRRT, IABP, Impella and transvenous pacemakers Position Responsibilities Incorporates scientific, behavioral and humanistic principles for application to clinical practice. Utilizes, adheres and supports departmental standards and practice guidelines. Applies nursing theory to the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of patient responses to health and illness. Assesses patient health care preferences and expectations. The unit is part of UI Health Care's Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division. Lower Level features 30 private patient rooms and is designed to care for patients admitted to UI Health Care under observation or recovery level of care, with a focus on timely treatment. The patient population cared for on this unit includes both medical and surgical patient populations who are typically admitted to the hospital for an estimated 24-48 hour stay. Patient diagnoses frequently treated as medical observation include but are not limited to chest pain, abdominal pain, back pain, and syncope. Surgical recovery patients include a variety of procedures under the care of the following services: orthopedics, urology, plastics, and cardiology, among others. Being an intermediate unit, our patients do require more care than provided on acute medical/surgical unit. The unit also staffs Respiratory Therapists 24/7. The other 6 beds serve Palliative Care patients. These patients consist of a wide range of diagnoses with varying treatment plans. Some are cancer patients receiving pain and symptom management, whereas other patients are receiving end of life care.
