Responsibilities Practices family centered nursing according to policies and Nurse Practice Act; serves as charge nurse when assigned; supervises, plans, evaluates, and coordinates patient care provided by other licensed and non-licensed staff; demonstrates CPR according to American Heart Association standards; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; serves as preceptor for new employees and nursing students; utilizes the Nursing process to assess the patient, pllan individualized care, identify expected outcomes and implement and evaluate nursing interventions for patients and families; provides direct patient care according to unit specific competencies; performs therapeutic procedures and assists with diagnostic procedures required for the care of the patient; administers medications including controlled substances by all routes; administers blood and blood products; responds appropriately to emergency patient situations; starts IVs; performs activities of daily living; requires minimal supervision to safely perform patient care; when performing skilled procedures the RN can state the purpose, rationale, precautions and observations related to that procedure; utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety and moving equipment that is necessary to perform essential functions; provides patient and family education by planning, coordinating and delegating, as appropriate, the educational needs of each patient; completed eduaction documentation; utilizes a personal computer or terminal to access the Hospital Information System; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages; maintains accurate and complete medical records by utilizing the correct documentation tools and procedures, adult admission history completed within unit timeframe, daily shift assessment complete with signature, completes discharge instructions/assessment, completes Pain Assessment tool, completes MAR and restraint documentation, transcribes physician orders, and supervises, evaluates and finalizies the patient care record; demonstrates the ability to provide competent patient care to the following patient populations Pediatric, Adolescent, Adults, Geriatric; cares for the patient on Intraaortic Balloon Pump (IABP), Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD); pulls arterial sheaths; performs basic EKG interpretation; performs hemodynamic monitor set-up, maintenance, monitoring and use inclusive of arterial lines, flow directed catheters, ICP lines; manages patients receiving temporary/permanent cardiac pacing; initiates and titrates medications (including emergency meds, vasoactive, antiarrhythmic, insulin infusion, sedation infusions, blood and blood components); manages patients being mechanically ventilated; uses SV02, SJ02, Camino monitors, and temperature management devices; follows unit standards for documentation i.e. alarm limits, turning, suctioning, tubing, fluid and dressing changes. Maintains accurate I & O, cumulative totals; assists with shift duty assignments or serves as a staff nurse as needed; as charge nurse identifies, organizes and directs activities to utilize resources, personnel, and materials to meet the needs of the patient and nursing staff; communicates with the Nurse Manager and Nurse Administrator, on an ongoing basis, regarding changes in unit status, patient related issues, staffing issues, Quality Management issues and other events as they evolve; acts as first line in problem resolution with other departments and any patient complaints; assists with shift duty assignments or serves a staff nurse as needed; verifies that emergency equipment is functional; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required. Qualifications Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and a current Alabama RN license or current Multi-State RN License in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) for Alabama. Responsibilities Abides by and enforces all hospital policies and procedures, including those pertaining to confidentiality; provides anesthetic to patients undergoing operative or invasive procedures, scheduled or emergent: general anesthetic, regional anesthetic, IV block, monitored anesthesia care; provides perioperative anesthetic management for all groups and risk categories; performs preoperative anesthetic assessment, interprets data, and formulates anesthetic plan; assembles equipment and supplies for anesthetic and performs safety check of equipment; uses proper technique, titration, and administration of all anesthetic drugs including controlled substances; performs intraoperative evaluation with continuous visual and auditory monitoring of vital signs; places arterial lines, monitors and replaces fluids, blood, and blood products and other intravenous fluids deemed necessary; administers medications including controlled substances by all routes; transports patient to recovery area and gives oral/written report of intraoperative course; performs postoperative evaluation of patient; provides patient or guardian with risks, benefits, and anesthetic plan; performs emergency care outside the operative setting including starting IV’s, intubation, and airway management; places thermodilution and pulmonary artery catheters; maintains accurate and complete medical records by: completing pre-anesthesia evaluation, documenting a continuous, accurate, legible account of physiological and anesthetic status, completing Quality Management forms, and documenting postoperative evaluation notes; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; ability to respond to digital, voice, and overhead pages; available in hospital within thirty(30) minutes of call; accesses and accurately maintains electronic and paper medical records; regular and prompt attendance and the ability to work the schedule as defined and additional hours and call as required; related duties as required. Qualifications Graduation from an accredited school of nursing meeting the minimum standards set by the State of Alabama, completion of an accredited course in anesthesia training, licensure with the State of Alabama as a Registered Nurse and certification with the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.
