Supervisor Nursing RN

Summary Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Clinical Supervisor RN position is responsible for serving as a clinical resource and unit expert for staff. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model. The Clinical Supervisor RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice. Responsibilities (35%) *Directs patient activity within the area of responsibility. Provides on-going evaluation of patient status and suggests changes in treatment program to physicians involved as necessary. Interprets physician orders and helps staff work within orders to obtain desired results. Provides up-to-date patient status reports to unit manager. (25%) *Determines staffing needs and scheduling patterns for coverage of unit and coordinates this with surgical services managers. Approves or denies requests for vacation, personal holidays, or sick days and corrects staffing accordingly. Makes changes in staffing assignments as level of activity changes. Works within established budget for area. (25%) *Assists with hiring, disciplining, counseling and discharging employees within the area according to medical center policy. Evaluates staff within area of responsibility through annual Job Performance Reviews. Takes an active role in creating and ensuring staff competencies. Assists with onboarding and coordination of new staff orientation. Takes an active part in nursing management meetings. Serves on nursing service committees as appointed by the Directors. (15%) *Participates in direct patient care when needed and appropriate. Maintains quality assurance within the area of responsibility and possesses a high degree of clinical expertise in that area. Remains available for staff consultations and recommends changes when appropriate. Other Duties And Responsibilities: Assesses competency of staff and directs employees by making appropriate assignments. Maintains clinical expertise and serves as a role model to staff. Participates in direct patient care when appropriate. Collaborates with staff and physicians to maintain excellent standards of care including writing policies and procedures for the unit. Provides input into the establishment of the annual operating/capital budget for the unit. Participates in the development of proposals for staffing, capital development and other projects that will enhance the services provided within Surgical Services. Identify needs, plans, develops and implements programs for orientation, staff development and on-going employee education. Works with physicians and non-nursing department personnel in planning coordinated patient care. Maintains open lines of communication by meeting regularly with nurse managers, shift administrators and holding regular staff meetings. Meets with members of medical staff when appropriate to resolve problems and maintain open communication. Follows lines of authority, responsibility and communication with designated area, nursing service and other departments. Works with visitors to ensure customer satisfaction, address complaints/concerns, and meet their individual needs. Maintains Process Improvement programs for patient care. Acts on recommendations of audit committees and physicians. Assists in the development of standards of care for patients. Assures that quality nursing care is an on-going process of improvement and meets pre-established standards. Other duties as assigned. Summary This position is responsible for assessing the needs of each patient during a surgical procedure, and ensures that policies and procedures are met and maintains patient safety. Outlines individual care plans, implements, evaluates and documents care of patient during surgery. Provides leadership to the Riecker Surgery Center team, communicates with patient and family, Surgery Center team and manager and ancillary departments. Participates in staff development through preceptorship and continuing education. Assists anesthesia and performs other duties as assigned. Responsibilities (40%) *Assesses the needs of the surgical patient and develops a plan of care specific for that patient. Implements and evaluates the plan of care during the procedure and makes necessary adjustments keeping patient safety a priority. (20%) *Supervises activity in room. Anticipates and coordinates any schedule changes for the room. Assembles equipment and supplies. Assists anesthesia as necessary. Monitors sterile field.
