Overview The Lactation RN will assist patient's mothers with breastfeeding/pumping/kangaroo care; provide education and support to parents and staff on the benefits of breastfeeding; collect and maintain data on breastfed infants; provide education on benefits of donor breast milk when appropriate, assist with consents; manage and monitor the ordering, supplies, and storage for banked breast milk sufficient for the unit needs; assist staff with preparation and storage of expressed breast milk; and assist with discharge teaching/education. The Lactation RN is expected to perform all staff nurse activities and function as charge nurse, when assigned. The Lactation RN maintains overall accountability/responsibility for assigned patients, even though some activities/tasks may be delegated to Technical Nurses, Patient Care Associates, and /or Sitters. Assignments are performed appropriately to age and developmental level of patients being served.
