Job Title: School Nurse About the Campus: The University of Chicago Charter School is a neighborhood charter school on the South Side of Chicago. Comprised of three campuses spanning all grades from early childhood through high school, UChicago Charter is a PreK to 12 superhighway that empowers students to RISE to excellence at every level, cultivating critical thinkers and leaders for success in college and in life. North Kenwood/Oakland, founded in 1998, educates children from prekindergarten to grade five. Donoghue, created in 2005, also serves children from prekindergarten to grade five. Woodlawn, established in 2006, educates students from grade six to grade twelve. Position Summary: The School Nurse will provide health care services to students in an elementary school setting. They will be responsible for administering routine medications and providing basic first aid for minor injuries. The School Nurse will also be responsible for stabilizing severely ill or injured students until parents, guardians or emergency services arrive. The School Nurse will also provide treatment for minor ailments, such as mild fevers, and monitor students who visit their office to determine if additional medical assistance is needed. This is a full-time, 10-month position. Duties and Responsibilities: Professional Nursing Practice Provide professional nursing services within the scope of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. Assess student health concerns and determine appropriate nursing interventions. Provide nursing care for students experiencing illness, injury, chronic health conditions, or other health-related concerns. Recognize changes in a student's health status and initiate appropriate interventions and referrals. Respond to health emergencies and provide appropriate first aid and emergency nursing care. Notify the nursing supervisor, administrator, parent/guardian, emergency services, or healthcare provider as appropriate. Student Health Assessment and Screening Conduct health assessments and screenings as assigned. Identify potential health concerns requiring further evaluation. Follow up on identified health concerns in accordance with established procedures. Individual Student Health Plans Implement established Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans, and other student health plans as directed. Provide nursing care and health services identified in student health plans. Communicate changes in student health status to the nursing supervisor. Participate in care coordination for students with complex or chronic health conditions. Health Records and Electronic Documentation Enter required student health information into the school's designated electronic health record/student information system in accordance with school policy and established timelines. Review relevant existing student health information before providing care when accessible and appropriate. Ensure documentation is available to authorized members of the nursing team to support continuity and coordination of care. Communication and Care Coordination Communicate significant health concerns, changes in condition, treatments, and follow-up needs to the appropriate personnel. Participate in multidisciplinary meetings when requested and appropriate to the RN's role. Communicable Disease and Health/Safety Responsibilities Follow school procedures for communicable disease prevention and control. Implement appropriate infection-control and blood-borne pathogen precautions. Report communicable disease concerns in accordance with school procedures and applicable public health requirements. Assist with emergency preparedness and response activities related to student health. Special Education and 504 Support Provide nursing information and clinical observations for students receiving special education or Section 504 services, as requested. Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team when assigned. Assist with implementation of health-related accommodations and services within the RN's scope of practice and assigned responsibilities. Communicate health-related changes that may affect a student's educational program to the appropriate school personnel. Health Education and Staff Support Assist in training designated school personnel regarding student-specific health procedures when assigned and authorized. Professional Responsibilities Practice according to the Illinois Nurse Practice Act and applicable Illinois laws and regulations. Participate in required professional development and school/district training. Follow established nursing protocols, policies, procedures, and standards. Maintain professional boundaries and protect student confidentiality. Perform other nursing-related duties within the RN's scope of practice as assigned. Position Qualifications: Bachelor of Science or an Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university is required. Must have an active Illinois license to practice as issued by the IL Department of Professional Regulations Must have a current American Heart Association (AHA) approved CPR certification that includes a hands-on component. Previous nursing experience in a school environment or working with children and youth is preferred Reflective and receptive to professional feedback and coaching Possess strong written and oral communication skills Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, staff, students, parents, and community partners Strong records management and computer skills are essential Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data; coordinate nursing functions; and maintain emotional control under emergencies and high-priority tasks Salary Range: $65,500.00 - $80,000.00 The included pay rate or range represents the University of Chicago Charter School's good faith estimate of the possible compensation offer for this role at the time of posting. The salary will be commensurate of years of experience and education.
