RN’s function in two areas, Procedural and Intake/Recovery. The Procedural RN, in the endoscopy suite, works in the procedure room alongside of the MD performing tasks and maneuvers as delegated to them from the Endoscopist. This hands-on position requires great technical skills as well as a vast knowledge of anatomy and physiology.The Procedural RN plays a key role in collaborating with the MD and other members of the health care team to provide the best care possible to the patients. The RN working in the Pre/Post area are responsible for completing a focused history and patient assessment prior to their endoscopy procedure. In this capacity, RNs will provide patient education for endoscopic procedures; review the medical history, including the current medication list and allergies to ensure the patient is able to proceed with their scheduled endoscopy procedure. In recovery, RNs are responsible for monitoring patients’ post-sedation. In this capacity, RNs will continue physiologic monitoring until patient meets discharge criteria.
