CORE JOB SUMMARY The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) – Fellow is provid e d specialized training in the management of assigned specialty patients in a variety of settings to ensure optimal quality of care and gaining necessary skill sets to develop and strengthen proficiencies within the clinical setting while learning to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers. The Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship program at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine will complete rotations in a variety of clinical setting located within UHealth to include both inpatient and outpatient settings over a period of weeks, as assigned by specialty . CORE JOB FUNCTIONS Clinical Role Provides care to a select group of patients by determining and rendering advanced nursing and medical interventions. Assesses patients by interviewing and examining the patient, reviewing the patient’s medical history, physician’s diagnosis and orders, diagnostic test results (labs, x-ray, MRI, etc.) to determine medical diagnosis, plan of care , and monitor patient’s progress. Reviews medical record s including physician/consultation notes, labs , and diagnostic tests results to f ormulate medical diagnoses. Collaborates with physician and preceptors through discussion and assessment of diagnoses to d evelop a plan of care and i dentifies expected outcomes , including interventions . Documents and coordinates plan of care. Provides patient/family education regarding disease processes, treatment options, treatment outcomes, possible complications , medications, discharge planning , and lifestyle modification. Collaborates with team members to ensure implementation of plan and employs physician orders per protocols . Assists in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care. Evaluates the patient’s progress in attaining expected outcomes by follow - up with collaborating physician. Collaborates with members of the education department and units’ leadership team in planning educational opportunities and competency evaluation for nursing staff members. Conducts or participates in multidisciplinary rounds and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients. The Medical Assistant (MA) 2 will perform multi-skilled tasks to assist the medical providers. The MA shall assist patients’ healthcare management and clinical procedures in a culturally competent manner utilizing evidence-based standards of quality, safety, and service. The MA provides hands-on care to patients while adhering to regulatory requirements, standards of care, and institutional policies and procedures, under the direct supervision and responsibility of a licensed physician. The physician in charge may delegate the tasks to oversee the MA to a Nurse or Designee in charge of the unit/clinic. The MA shall adhere to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, recognize, respond to emergencies, and demonstrate professionalism. The MA provides care within the philosophy, mission, vision, and values, as well as within the policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing and the University of Miami. As a professional, monitors the quality of care provided and nurtures a compassionate and healing environment. The MA works directly with the Nurse Manager/Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and/or the Designee in charge of the Unit or Clinic to ensure a safe delivery of care that supports the UHealth mission. Ensures compliance with all State and Federal regulatory guidelines to include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Professional Practice Performs professionally within their clinical scope of practice skills utilizing State, Federal, and University of Miami’s standards, guidelines, relevant statues, rules, and regulations. Incorporates protocols and standards of care into daily practice. Core Duties and Qualifications Abides by the standards for ethical behavior, therapeutic communication and protecting the privacy of patient information. Demonstrate knowledge of basic medical terminology. Assists providers with physical examinations by preparing treatment/exam room with proper supplies, instruments, and materials, as directed. Understands the importance of medical and surgical asepsis. Prepares patients for physician’s care with basic instruction and information regarding examination procedures. Performs routine laboratory tests. Perform vital signs, EKG, phlebotomy, and document in patient’s medical record. Observes and reports patient’s signs or symptoms changes. Administers medication safely as directed by the physician. Assists in patient care activities such as walking. Escorts and transports patients to various hospital locations. Cleans and/or sterilizes medical instruments while observing principles of sterile technique. Schedules patients for tests and completes required forms for laboratory work. Provides patient with provider’s care instructions and information. Maintains accurate and complete patient records and documentation. Orders, stocks, and inventories supplies, and assists in performing clerical duties. Adheres to University and unit-level Policies & Procedures and safeguards University’s assets. *Note: Designee in charge of the unit shall assign specific functions and competencies pertinent to the unit. Physician in charge shall review and sign-off all Medical Assistant’s competencies and evaluations. Manage patients' clinical requests to include medication refills, ordering of DME/services, and completion of necessary paperwork/letters. Perform and assist with medical procedures with or without direct physician supervision within the scope of the license/certification. Provide patient education and participate in patient/family interventions. Follow post-operative patients and monitor for any postoperative complications and patients have the resources necessary for recovery. Ensures the appropriate applications of critical pathways.
