Responsibilities The Student Nurse Extern is an adjunct to the patient care team. The extern performs at the level that has successfully been completed and passed in the clinical section at a local college. Under the general supervision of an RN the extern provides direct patient care in accordance with the established protocols, the skills they are able to perform are expanded. All newly hired externs will first function in the capacity of a nursing assistant, regardless of their nursing program clinical level. When the student has been cleared by the Supervisor, they may be moved to their appropriate skill level. Qualifications Education and Work Experience Successfully completed the first semester of a nursing program. Must be in good and academic standing. Current Basic Life Support Certification. JOB SUMMARY The nurse extern is a participant in a summer program for nursing students. The nurse extern program is designed to provide the nursing student with an opportunity to strengthen and reinforce their knowledge and skill in the practice of nursing under direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor to ease their transition to practice. The nurse extern will follow their preceptor's work schedule and will assist in the provision of nursing care for that nurse's patients. Additionally, nurse extern will attend 8 didactic educational sessions during their rotation. Assists the Registered Nurse by performing patient care activities delegated to the unlicensed nursing support professional as well as additional specific functions for which he/she has been prepared. Observes and reports the functioning of equipment, the results of treatments, condition of dressings and any change in patient condition. Incorporates the concepts of the Hospital's Guest Relations Program into all aspects of patient care activities (i.e. confidentiality, responsiveness, caring).
