Under supervision of the RN and OU College of Nursing faculty, the Nursing Student Intern will work with a preceptor to complete the required critical care clinical hours and routine tasks in patient care. Essential Responsibilities: Responsibilities listed in this section are core to the position. Under supervision of the RN and in collaboration with the patient and family, systematically and continually monitors the patient’s health status and implements the plan of care and performs tasks as defined by the RN. About the Role: The RN Extern position is designed to provide nursing students or recent graduates with hands-on clinical experience in a healthcare setting under the supervision of licensed nurses and healthcare professionals. The RN Extern will assist with basic nursing duties, patient assessments, and documentation, gaining exposure to various medical conditions and treatment protocols. Ultimately, the RN Extern will support the healthcare team in delivering high-quality patient care while preparing for full licensure and independent nursing practice. Minimum Qualifications: Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program or recent graduate of an accredited nursing program. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or willingness to obtain upon hire. Ability to pass a background check and drug screening as required by the healthcare facility. Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Legal authorization to work in the United States. Preferred Qualifications: Previous clinical experience in a healthcare setting, such as internships or volunteer work. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems. Additional certifications such as CPR or First Aid. Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment. Experience working with diverse patient populations. Responsibilities: Assist registered nurses and healthcare staff with patient care activities including vital signs monitoring, hygiene assistance, and mobility support. Observe and document patient conditions and report any changes to the supervising nurse promptly. Support the healthcare team in maintaining a safe, clean, and organized patient environment. Participate in patient education and provide emotional support to patients and their families under guidance. Assist with the preparation and maintenance of medical equipment and supplies as needed. Skills: The RN Extern will utilize strong communication skills daily to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members, ensuring clear and compassionate exchanges. Critical thinking and observational skills are essential for monitoring patient conditions and recognizing changes that require attention. Time management and organizational skills help the extern balance multiple tasks and responsibilities efficiently during shifts. Familiarity with clinical procedures and medical terminology supports accurate documentation and adherence to care protocols. Additionally, teamwork and adaptability are vital as the extern collaborates with various healthcare professionals in a dynamic clinical environment.
