Job Summary The Surgical Technician First Assist provides direct support to surgeons during surgical procedures, ensuring efficient operative and invasive procedures by maintaining the sterile field, providing necessary instruments and supplies, and assisting in critical surgical tasks. This role requires advanced technical skills to support the surgical team, including positioning patients, retracting tissues, controlling bleeding, suturing, and applying dressings. The Surgical Technician First Assist collaborates with surgeons, nurses, and other surgical team members to ensure optimal patient outcomes and post-operative care. Essential Functions Functions as a scrub person during surgical procedures, preparing and organizing sterile supplies and instruments, maintaining an organized sterile field, and providing necessary instruments and supplies to the surgical team. Performs first assistant duties, including providing exposure through instrument handling, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques as directed by the surgeon. Handles and dissects tissues, clamps blood vessels, coagulates bleeding points, and places drains as instructed by the surgeon. Assists with wound closure, including suturing subcutaneous layers and skin, applying staples, and dressing surgical sites per surgeon instructions. Ensures sterility and safety standards, conducting proper counting procedures with the RN circulator, following infection control protocols, and taking corrective actions if needed. Prepares and transports surgical instruments for decontamination, ensuring proper handling and sterilization for future use. Assists in post-procedure room turnover, ensuring procedural areas are properly cleaned and prepared for subsequent surgeries. Performs other duties as assigned. Maintains regular and reliable attendance. Complies with all policies and standards. Qualifications 1-3 years of experience as a Surgical Technician or First Assist in an acute care setting required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficiency in surgical techniques, aseptic principles, and sterile field maintenance. Strong knowledge of surgical anatomy, instrumentation, and procedural workflows. Ability to anticipate surgeon needs and respond quickly to intraoperative changes. Strong attention to detail in surgical counting procedures, patient positioning, and procedural safety. Effective communication and teamwork skills, ensuring smooth collaboration with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesia providers. Knowledge of infection control standards, regulatory compliance, and patient safety guidelines. Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure surgical environment, demonstrating composure and professionalism. Position Summary: This position is only available for Certified Surgical Technologists at Parkwest Medical Center and Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. Facilitates patient care by assisting physicians and nursing staff before, during and after surgical procedures by creating and maintaining a sterile field and providing the instruments and supplies required by the surgeons in a sterile manner according to the established plan of patient care. Competently performs with and/or without assistance the majority of assigned cases in a given service/shift; may perform difficult or complicated cases either with or without assistance. Responsibilities Under supervision of RN/MD, facilitates patient care by assisting the surgeon before, during and after surgical procedures by creating and maintaining a sterile field and providing the instruments and supplies required by the surgeons in a sterile manner according to the established plan for patient care; follows unit standards and processes to deliver age-appropriate care for all patients; demonstrates accountability as an individual and team member in meeting patient/family needs; participates in identifying cost-effective measures for clinical care. Plans, sets up, performs and cleans up the assigned surgical procedure as a circulator and/or as a scrub tech; demonstrates knowledge of equipment and instrumentation pertaining to case; safely operates special equipment which may be used in surgical cases (e.g. lasers, microscopes, tourniquets, endoscopes, drills, saws, etc.); maintains instrument and equipment integrity; performs room turn-over and terminal cleaning; utilizes supplies appropriately and in a cost effective manner. Demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles of asepsis in creating and maintaining the sterile field; uses proper technique when scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and setting up of sterile fields; recognizes what is sterile and what is unsterile; recognizes contamination and takes proper action to correct situation; continually monitors the sterile field and surgical team to assure that sterility is maintained. Assists nurse in performing sharp, sponge and instrument counts according to policy as needed; demonstrates proper counting technique for all countables and applies proper procedures with incorrect counts; demonstrates understanding of exceptions to counts. Demonstrates proper positioning techniques; knows the proper position for cases and understands the use of proper positioning aids to protect nerves, bony prominences and to maintain circulation. Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards. Completes required education assignments annually. Works toward achieving goals and objectives and participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested. Performs other duties as assigned.
