Completion of a Surgical Technologist program, completion of Military Operating Room Specialist course or the Froedtert Health sponsored apprentice II program required. LICENSURE DESCRIPTION: Certification as a Surgical Technologist. Surgical Technologist Level 3 staff, or above, with a date of hire or adjusted date of hire prior to 8/1/2020 are not required to be certified, as long as they meet the criteria in the job description. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire. Work is differentiated from Operating Room Technician 1 and 2 by participation on identified specialty service line teams, which is documented by completing a competency checklist in operative procedures performed under that service line and maintenance and use of special equipment under that service line. Incumbents are required to exercise particular care in the observation of aseptic techniques and sterilization procedures in preparing and maintaining surgical equipment and supplies. Supervision is received from the professional, medical and nursing staff through constant observation and evaluation of work in progress for adherence to prescribed techniques and procedures. Responsibilities Performs duties as assigned including but not limited to the following: Assists in the inspection and indicated cleaning of the room prior to the procedure. Assists in collection of necessary equipment and supplies utilizing the surgeon's procedure card. Maintains aseptic technique throughout all phases of work. Assembles instruments and supplies on table and mayo stand. Performs counts with the circulating nurse. Assists in the draping of the operative site. Assists surgeon and scrub nurse; anticipates and supplies the needs of the surgeon with instruments, sutures and sponges throughout the procedure. Assumes responsibility for the identification and maintenance of specimens after release from the surgeon until release to the circulating nurse. Identifies medications on sterile table according to policy and procedure. Utilizes safety measures for patient, self and other team members in the handling of sharps, cautery and other equipment. Uses specialized equipment: Cauterizes; Scopes; Drills, etc. Communicates complete report to relief. Accounts for and removes all instruments from sterile field. Removes drapes from the patient depositing disposable and cloth in the proper bag. Decontaminates instruments and handles supplies from sterile set-up. Responsibilities The OB Scrub Technician provides direct care to obstetrical/neonatal patient under the direct supervision of a licensed RN. The OB Scrub Technician performs the role of surgical scrub for obstetrically related surgical procedures. Maintains aseptic environment during set-up for surgery or delivery and throughout surgical procedures. Responsible for maintaining and stocking supplies and equipment throughout the Labor and Delivery Suite, including Recovery and Operating Rooms. Assists with perioperative care as outlined in the policy and procedure manuals. Assist with deliveries, as necessary. Assists with other aspects of unit operations as assigned. Qualifications Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technician Program. Certified as a Certified Surgical Technician (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or equivalent required. AHA CPR required. One (1) year of related experience preferred. Must maintain a neat, clean, professional appearance. Must have understanding, patience, and tact in dealing with physicians and fellow workers. Must pay attention to detail. Must have excellent hand-eye coordination. Must be self-motivated and work in an efficient and effective manner. Must work in air-conditioned environment with temperature of 65-73 degrees and humidity of 45-55%. When assigned to pediatric cases, temperature may be up to 85-90 degrees F. Must wear hospital provided scrub attire while on duty. Potential for cuts, bruises, muscle strains and exposure to contagious disease via and body fluids. Potential for exposure to anesthesia waste gases, ethylene oxide, harsh disinfectants, sterilizing agents, high steam pressure agents and radiation.
