The surgical tech recognizes significant conditions and reactions of the patient and notifies the appropriate patient care team as necessary. Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Surgical Technologist I: Education: High School Diploma or GED; requires completion of a Surgical Tech program with the ability to sit for certification OR 2 years minimum working in a Surgical Tech role. Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a Surgical Technologist/Technician role if completion of a Surgical tech program has not been completed. Licensure/Certification: American Heart Association CPR (BLS) Other Skills/Knowledge: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft software. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to be detail oriented. Requires intra-operative orientation to learn department/unit policies, procedures and work routines; to develop competency in the use of medical equipment and instruments used in the procedure/operating room; to learn quality/safety standards; and to gain an understanding of the various types of surgical procedures within their service line. Position Summary Surgical Technologist staff may work in one or both of the Perioperative settings (Main Operating Room, Ambulatory Surgery Center or procedural clinic) or in Central Sterilizing Services. In the Perioperative setting, Surg Techs work under the direction of Staff Nurses and assist with surgical procedures, the provision of therapeutic, preventive and emergency patient care duties; and the preparation, operation and maintenance of routine and complex equipment, instruments and supplies and implants. In Central Sterilizing Services, Surg Techs work under the supervision of CSS management. They complete all aspects of sterile processing including decontamination, supply and instrument preparation, packaging, sterilization, sterile storage, distribution of sterile medical devices, inventory, stocking, and distribution of medical supplies. Duties To Include Communicates and interacts with patients, visitors, and other health care professionals in an effective manner and maintains positive, cooperative relationships. Demonstrates understanding of principles of medical and surgical asepsis. Recognizes and communicates breaks in aseptic technique. Prepares surgical area for patient care. Assists with the provision of patient care with regard to the patient's condition and age. Assists with documentation according to department/division standard under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Demonstrates competency in performance of delegated technical functions and clinical activities, in accordance with institutional policies. Provides for proper care and handling of equipment, instruments, supplies and implants (E/I/S/I). Precepts staff and/or healthcare students to scrubbing duties and central sterilization techniques. Performs computer functions within scope of role as defined by the individual unit. Implements measures to prevent potential patient problems/complications and reports unusual incidents. Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality. Practices standard precautions in infection control in accordance with institutional policy. Follows changes in patient care protocol based on research findings. Decontaminates, cleans, sorts, inspects, disassembles and reassembles complex surgical instrumentation. Operates equipment utilized to clean, disinfect and sterilize surgical instrumentation, including all manner of patient care equipment including endoscopes. Accesses reference materials via computer systems, follows guides and instructions to assemble high volumes of complex instrument and implant trays. Inspects and evaluates instruments for function and cleanliness. Confirms all quality assurance mechanisms are in place. Labels, seals and documents all items processed. Performs all aspects of sterilization, packaging inspection, equipment operation, safety procedures, proper documentation, and prioritization. Sterilizes items per manufacturer’s instructions, verifies correct parameters used for all instruments. Assembles case carts in accordance with patient/surgeon procedure specific cards within appropriate time frame and documents missing items. Performs duties in a high stress environment, responds to emergencies and urgent add-on cases. Receives and responds to a high volume of phone calls to provide additional items as needed. Maintains a high level of customer service. Performs regular biological monitoring of sterilizers to ensure sterilizer efficacy. Conducts challenge tests on sterilization and decontamination equipment. Performs preventative maintenance functions on all equipment. The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) Surgical Technologist Residency Program is designed for new graduate Surgical Technologists transitioning from student to novice surgical technologist in the operating room environment. HSS is committed to supporting new perioperative professionals through a structured learning experience that combines hands-on clinical training, mentorship, and professional development. This program is designed to build the foundational skills necessary to succeed in the highly specialized orthopedic surgical environment at HSS. The Surgical Technologist Residency Program is a twelve-month structured program from the date of hire. Residents will work directly under the supervision of the Professional Development team and experienced clinical preceptors , receiving individualized clinical instruction, mentorship, and competency-based training. The first six months of the program will focus on completing clinical orientation. Months six through twelve will emphasize mentorship and the continued development of clinical skills and knowledge. During the program, residents will gain experience in the perioperative environment while developing technical skills, sterile technique expertise, and procedural knowledge required to support orthopedic surgical teams. Clinical training and department placement may vary based on operational needs and learning opportunities. The clinical orientation process is structured with progressive learning objectives designed to support the development of surgical technologists in a high-acuity operating room setting. Residents will receive continuous feedback and evaluation from clinical preceptors, the Professional Development team, and departmental leadership to support their transition into independent practice. Regularly scheduled monthly meetings and educational sessions throughout the program are mandatory to provide residents the opportunities for knowledge building, shared learning, mentorship, and professional growth. The goal of the program is to ensure residents develop the confidence, technical skills, and clinical judgment necessary to succeed as a Surgical Technologist at HSS.
